hi going through my grandads old stuff, came across a very old card:

Arthur Humphrey ( Late F.Funnel) Fruiterer and greengrocer.
33 lingfield road,East grinstead

its a long shot no dates i am afraid.

What are you looking for here - is it census info for Arthur?

There are only two AH's showing in East Grinstead in the 1901 census, on ewho is 24 and working as a bricklayer's labourer, the other who is 11 and a scholar.
When so you think the card dates from?

I can't find any Funnel's in 1901 in East Grinstead.

Hi Paul, yes i know it was a long shot, thought it might be in A kellys or something,anyway I reckon its after about 1946, its a case of trying anything, as i am running out of leads and clues !!!.

I was born and bred in EG and know there used to be a fruit/veg shop on the corner of Lingfield and Charlwoods roads.The street number would seem about right.

On the 1901 address search, 33 is the first number for Lingfield Rd. If I read it right, the numbered houses are all on the right, starting at the East Grinstead end and heading towards Baldwins Hill. The posh ones on the left all have names and start after the recreation ground.

I did a Royal Mail search on 33, (postcode is RH19 2EU) and provided they have not been renumbered, it is a bit further down than the corner of Charlwoods Rd. I can't remember if those shops were more recent. Last time I went to the one on the corner it was a house clearance/junk shop.
