Hello,
I wonder if someone could clarify for me the distinction between Southport and North Meols in the era my ancestors were born and lived in these areas. I will start with the ones I believe were born Southport briefly they are: John johnson 1899 Gordon Street (father) John Johnson 1874 School Street (grandfather) and Job Johnson 1830 Little London (g/grandfather). These addresses are also shown on Census returns as being North Meols. Job Johnson's parents both born North Meols, Robert Johnson baptised 1788 Crossens and Jane Fairclough born Churchtown 1785. The generations following (quite a few) all baptised, married and buried North Meols. The main towns being Crossens and Churchtown followed by Banks with two burials recorded for Marshside. The predominant church for their activities (bmd) was St Cuthbert, North Meols. These towns now seem to be part of Southport or were they always? I am confused as to whether they are all included in Southport for their details, all North Meols or there is a division? Thank you
Zane Johnson

Hi Zane
There is a lot of information on the web & in books about the development of Southport - http://www.mysouthport.co.uk/History.htm amongst others.
The current town of Southport developed from a cluster of hamlets during the Victorian era, as a seaside town, so the original parish was North Meols, with areas / hamlets / villages within it known as Little London, Churchtown, Crossens, Marshside etc. The parish of Southport came much later
Post 1837 registrations were to Ormskirk until recent times.
For church registers, the Lan-OPC site http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/North-Meols/index.html also explains the developments
Hope this helps - you probably know that there were / are a lot of Johnsons in Southport
Regards SandraC

Hello Sandra
Thanks for information. I think I've got it, if they were born today they would all be born in Southport. I knew the post 1837 registrations for this area were Ormskirk through ordering certificates from GRO. I mentioned Johnson to be brief, of course other names which may still be there include, Fairclough, Ryding, Ball/Baule, Hunt, Haworth, Brookfield etc. As an intended visitor one day I shouldn't be a stranger, surname wise.
Regards
Zane
