Slide and negative converter
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 09:21 BST (UK) »

I have been looking at the specs and reviews of the various devices which can scan slides and colour negatives into digital positives. These divide into stand alone devices and flat bed scanners. I am not interested in the latter.

The cheaper ones vary between £60 and £120. Many of those appear to be labels on a  generic item sold under several names. The reviews are not very flattering as to quality and speed although some reports are glowing even for devices which have other really bad reviews. Of course they may come from the manufacturer or dealer.

The next group seems more capable but are priced at £250 and upwards. I would be reluctant to pay so much since, of the thousands of old slides and negatives I have, I might only eventually convert 200 or so. At that sort of price it would be cheaper to send them out to be converted.

I would be grateful for opinions from any Rootschatters who have actually used such devices.

I have a stand alone scanner - it was about £70 and is rubbish - resolution nowhere near good enough

I do have a flat bed scanner - it's an Epson
I will  scan slides, though it is rather slow - but they are not bad quality.

I have hundreds maybe thousands of old slides I would like to scan but without a machine that will scan them in good quality in bulk and fast, they wn't get done

Gadget is the expert on scanning slides and film, think there are some sticky threads somewhere on here, can't find it at the moment

Several of our posters are very good at scanning slides - china being one that I can think of offhand.
I've scanned a few slides on my epson too.

In the past, bellows units were available for 35mm cameras for enabling ultra close-up work. They nearly all came with a clip-on bracket for copying slides direct to film, which can now be scanned easily.

If the majority of your originals are slides then this would be a far cheaper option as these bellows units can be picked up for peanuts, s/h.

Also, you may have a local camera club or society, that have members who still prefer the 35mm medium, who could copy or print up your originals. Perhaps there are some RootsChatters who might be able to do his.

From experience, these are far cheaper options than having them digitised professionally.

Roger.

Hi

I use an Epson Stylus Photo RX620 all-in-one
Have used this to convert my fathers vast collection of b&w and coloured slides
This has proved a great success
I am now in the process of doing all his colour negatives - also with great success so far

Yes I had a slide copying attachment for my old Canon A1

Don't use it now (the A1)

I have a copying extension for a digital camera. It takes one slide at a time and has problems when switching from slides in thin sleeves to those in thicker sleeves. Also it cannot handle colour negatives.

Roger I don't want to print them - just to digitize them on discs.

I have a very good flat-bed scanner - just not right for what I am trying to achieve.

I once tried an expensive Braun scanner that took slide magazines - ie 50 or 100 slides at a time.  Didn't go any further than trying as it was awful, poor quality of scans and at least a third each time had to be re-done as they had slipped and only part of the slide scanned.

Subsequently used a much cheaper Plustec OpticFilm 7 200i HiSpeed USB slide scanner.  Only takes four slides or 35mm negs at a time but gives reasonable results, if slow.  Whether I will ever scan 10000+ slides is a different matter.
