New question - Ghent street, Shankhill
« on: Friday 03 July 09 16:49 UTC (UK) »

I know in the 1911 census, Thomas Crowe lived at 19 Ghent Street Shankhill, Antrim. Does anyone know where this is as it doesn't seem to exist anymore.
Many thanks

Thomas Crowe actually lived at 37 Ghent Street according to 1911 Census- it is no. 19 on form B. If you look at the census page and check under additional pages it given the street number.

If no one who knows Belfast better can't find location of Ghent Street for you I'll have a look later.

Hi
I saw that entry which really confused us, but on the 1911 print out is says "Residents of house number 19 in Ghent Street" and lists Thomas Crowe and family.  In no 37 Ghent street there is a couple called Burton who was a labourer.  On the top right hand side on the cnsus it has page 19  Huh, so really do not understand this.

There are two sorts of numbers listed in 1911 census.
1) house number on the form
2) street number (the actual street address)
If you look at the additional page I mentioned above you'll see both numbers.

1910 directory for Belfast shows Ghent St. (Cambrai St.-Mill St. West).
www.lennonwylie.co.uk/gcomplete1910.htm
Other directories are listed under Antrim Resources- Directories:
www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,369534.0.html

If you search for "Ghent Place, Blefast" (off Sydney St. West) on Google Earth it shows the area.
