Please can anyone give me an idiots guide to how to find out if someone left a will.  I have an ancestor who died in West Ham in 1870 who seems to have been fairly well heeled but I have no idea where to start  looking.

Hi
Try googling wills and probate.
http://www.ancestor-search.info/NAT-Probate.htm
The above gives some information.  All wills after 1858 are held centrally in London.  You can view the index on fiche at many record offices and main libraries. They give a brief précis of the will contents such as amount left and executor.    You can then order a copy from the York Probate office by post.  Do search several years after the death though as sometimes probate is delayed.

Hi,

You could also try http://www.gazette-online.co.uk/  to find when probate was granted.  Go to advanced search and enter the "between dates", enter "probate" in the "with all the words box" and his name in the "exact phrase"  box.  If you don`t get a hit try just his surname instead of his full name.  The search uses OCR so it doesn`t always work correctly.  Worth a try though.
