Matty in Deerhurst and Harris in Apperly
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 10:12 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
Can anyone out there offer any info on these people before 1841?

Here's what i have:
My ggg grandfather was William Matty we have all the census for him apart from 1861, where we cannot find him. Our earliest census, 1841 has him as follows:

1841
Deerhurst, Gloucestershire
Joseph Matty, 40, ag lab b.gloucestershire
Sarah Matty. 35, not born in county
Charles Matty, 12, b.glouc
Samuel Matty, 10, b."
Maria Matty, 11, b."
George Matty, 6, b."
William Matty, 8months, b."

What was Sarah's maiden name? and can the parents and grandparents of Joseph be traced?

As for the Harris connection;
William Matty's 1st marriage was to Caroline Harris in Tewksbury 1875 (There is a spelling mistake and they are down as Mattey on the marriage cert)
We believe she was b,1836/37 and in gloucestershire.

Her's what i have for Caroline Harris:

1881 Deerhurst Glouc
Joseph Matty, 81, ag lab, deerhurst glouc
William Matty, 40, ag lab, "
Caroline Matty, 44, deerhurst glouc
Frederick Matty, 4, "
George Matty, 3, "

1871 St Mary's Cheltenham
Caroline Harris, 34, servant cook, apperly glouc

1861 362 High st St Mary's Cheltenham
Caroline Harris, 25, servant, apperly glouc

1851 (? 1. freeling st? islington? All Saints,?) can't quite make out the place. Would like to know if this is the correct census everything ties up, it's just the area she is in.
Caroline Harris, 15, servant, glouc

1841sweet briar? st, Hamlet of Kingsholm St Mary's, Glouc
(Mary?) Harris, 40, b.glouc
Caroline Harris, 5, "

I would like to find out more on these people and their relatives before them, if anyone could help me do so it would be fantastic!

Thanks

You're welcome - good luck with that.

Hempstead is a parish, by the way - it's always useful to search for Genuki+parish name if you want the low-down on a place:

Arent you lucky Grin Arranroots is a gem of info.

I found baptisms for the children of Joseph and Sarah on the IGI at familysearch but was thrown by one having Mothers name as Ann, not Sarah.

It looks like your Joseph married twice to maybe sisters Smiley

Ann BARNES
Joseph MATTEY
10 October 1825, Deerhurst, Gloust

Death from site you were given;
Ann MATTY, aged 24, 26 September 1828, Deerhurst

He then probably married Sarah the next year.

very lucky, and even more lucky to have you on the case to Trish Smiley

I was filtering through the Deerhurst records Arranroots just gave me and just found the Ann Barnes you mentioned, which puzzled me too.

It would be Charles who had the mother called Ann Barnes? as he is the oldest one i know off.

Thanks Trish

Pedro,

There's a wealth of Matty data from 1780 to 1875 extracted from the Deerhurst church records at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(A-M).htm#D

Regards

Chas

Whoops, the cover of Deerhurst is much more than that!

Thanks again for the pm gene-genie

fantastic!

Unless you are passing email addresses or info relating to living people it's best not to use PMs

1) it can cause duplication - we don't know what's been sent

2) there is no permanent record, which can be useful if your computer crashes

Now we're all left wondering whether to bother with anything else, or whether it's been done - see the dilemma?
