Hi

I wonder if anyone might have the Bristol Baptism registers and be able to locate the baptism of a SOPHIA LEDGER sometime around 1800?

Sophia appears in all census returns 1841-1881 clearly enumerated as born Bristol.  She married in 1822 in Devon and spent her entire married life in Northumberland (incredible how she journeyed so far!).

I know nothing more about her than this except she died at Tynemouth in 1884, a widow aged 81.

Can anyone help me please?

Carol,

Of the 4800 or so entries for the surname LEDGER in England given the IGI not one of them is shown as being baptized in Bristol.  What's more, there's no baptism for Sophia anywhere in England according to the IGI.

So my questions are:-  1. What was her husband's name and where did he come from?  2.  Was Sophia of the RC persuasion?

Thank  you for your reply Chas.

The name was actually LEDGER and you are right, I have already checked out the IGI before I posted this message.

Sophia Ledger married a Dennis Hill in 1822 in Devon.  He was born Kidderminster, Worcestershire in 1796, a Draper/hosier who ended up a wealthy Ship Owner on Tyneside.   Dennis Hill died in 1876, Sophia Hill died 1884 aged 84.

There are no variations in each of the census returns as to where Sophia was born, it most definitely said Bristol, Somerset(!).  Neither is there any doubt about her maiden surname, as one of their grandsons was named "Ledger Hill" although IGI lists her marriage in the name of LIDGER.

I was hoping the Bristol Parish Baptism Registers may have something to offer.  I know it is a long shot, but I may strike lucky.

Carol,

I noticed the typo and corrected it but by then you had seen it.  (I'd checked for Lodger just before answering.)

You did not mention Sophia's religeous persuasion but if she was R.C. that could explain why she is not in the IGI for few RC priests allowed the LDS to film their records.

Sorry Chas, I omitted to answer.    I doubt if she was RC but of course cannot be certain.  There is no evidence of any of the children or lower generations being RC.

Hello Carol,
I have a Sophia Ledger baptised 11-04-1800 St. Peter,s Parish, Bristol. reg. no.41a, page 1800, number 3, fiche 3 frame 9. on a cd from the Bristol & Avon Family History Society. (Bristol Diocese Baptismal Registers).
It shows her mothers name as Elizabeth, but there is no fathers name.

Peter, thank you so much.   This gives me a lead to follow.  I will see if Glos. Records Office can supply me with a copy of the entry.  I would assume from what you say that Elizabeth Ledger was an unmarried mother, thus making Sophia illegitimate.  Her Parish marriage entry may give other clues.
