Where and When was this street scene taken?
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 11:47 UTC (UK) »

Hi All...I recently picked up a second hand frame in Chipping Norton and this lovely print was in it...there is no additional info with it...I have found a J.H. Smith in Evesham..I wonder if he is related to W.H. Smith Cheesy..Perhaps someone with knowledge of the area might be able to identify the location and when it was taken...I wondered if was was around the 1930s
Thanks for looking.
Carol

Hi Carol

My first thoughts :-
Is that double yellow lines I can see
When where they first used
or is it a 'staged' picture

Hi Carol

Strange as it seems, I think this is Ashley Road, Hale, Cheshire (well it used to be Cheshire, it's Greater Manchester now).

See photo on the following link to Francis Frith.

What do you think?  The church is St Peter's Church.

Hiya Hippy...you okay?...Thanks for your response...I don't think they are double yellow lines..I think they are two rows of small tiles or bricks.

Carol

I lived on Ashley Road until age of 13 and recognised it straight away.  I think you're probably correct about the date, but that was before my time Roll Eyes  If I'm correct the delivery vehicle is Thomas Hill, Fruit and Veg.  We lived next door but one to that shop.  The first shop on the right as you look at the photo by the trellis fencing was a newsagents, coming forwards (i.e. out of the picture was a bowling green, then the Council Offices I think, then a drill hall, then a row of 3 shops, Hill's, then Southern's a bakers and then my mum's shop.  I don't suppose it had changed much from your photo until about the 1960s.   My cousin who lives in Lymm, Cheshire has said I wouldn't recognise the place now.  I think it is all upmarket boutiques and restaurants etc.

Lizzie

ps.  Off to watch Wimbledon on TV now.

Hi
the "Double Yellow Lines" are actually things called Granite Setts, they can still be seen in places (in use) today.  Normally at some road junctions.

There's a variety of photos of Ashley Road & St Peter's on the Trafford Lifetimes site at
http://www.trafford.gov.uk/content/tca/display_image.asp?ImageID=6242
is perhaps nearer Lizzie's era, or from 1980

Hello Hippy

What you take for double yellow lines are I think stone setts that are laid horizontally below the pavement level as part of the drainage system I guess.
