Hi Carol
Strange as it seems, I think this is Ashley Road, Hale, Cheshire (well it used to be Cheshire, it's Greater Manchester now).
See photo on the following link to Francis Frith.

What do you think? The church is St Peter's Church.

Carol
I lived on Ashley Road until age of 13 and recognised it straight away. I think you're probably correct about the date, but that was before my time If I'm correct the delivery vehicle is Thomas Hill, Fruit and Veg. We lived next door but one to that shop. The first shop on the right as you look at the photo by the trellis fencing was a newsagents, coming forwards (i.e. out of the picture was a bowling green, then the Council Offices I think, then a drill hall, then a row of 3 shops, Hill's, then Southern's a bakers and then my mum's shop. I don't suppose it had changed much from your photo until about the 1960s. My cousin who lives in Lymm, Cheshire has said I wouldn't recognise the place now. I think it is all upmarket boutiques and restaurants etc.

What you take for double yellow lines are I think stone setts that are laid horizontally below the pavement level as part of the drainage system I guess.
