seathwaite wad miners COMPLETED with thanks
« on: Wednesday 22 July 09 18:37 UTC (UK) »

These four rum looking gentlemen are wad (graphite) miners from the Borrowdale valley in the Lake District taken around 1860 I believe.  The gentleman with the largest hat is the Mine Agent, believed to be John Dixon

Would anyone be kind enough to give the old chaps a bit of a face lift please
Thanks
Sue

Hi Sue

I don't know if you have the book but the same photograph appears in Ian Tylers book on Seathwaite Wad and The Mines Of The Borrowdale Valley. It seem that the photograph is also in the collection of the Caldbeck Mining Museum. Unfortunately there are no names with the photograph but the book mentions the Dixons. They might be your Dixons. The list of miners at Wad mine is not complete and there are a few years missing but there is a John Dixon who was definitely an agent in 1876. There are years missing from 1859 to 1876. If you want me to have a look at the book for any other info I will try to find it for you.

Hi Evie
Thank you for your interest.  William Dixon Mine Agent was my lots of greats grandfather, as was his son John.  The restore of James Dixon and his dog from yesterday was the grandson of John Dixon of Seathwaite Mines fame.  I have Ian Tyler's book Seathwaite Wad and have met the man himself at Keswick Mining Museum. Ian believes that the gentleman at the front of the photo is John Dixon.  I should put a few of the "Dixon" men's photos side by side really to try and look for similar features !
I have traced my tree back to Williams grandfather.
Thank you so much for taking an interest and your offers of help.  I haven't been to the Caldbeck mining museum.  The records I have are from Carlisle Records office and I have letters etc actually written by these men in the early 1800's - its really amazing and wonderful to see their writing etc.
If you have any other info, I would be extremly grateful.
Regards
Sue

Hi Sue

Unfortunately I have no other info only from the book. We are friends of Ian and have most of his books. There are a couple of RC's that have an interest in the Dixons of Borrowdale but when I did a search I notice you have found them Smiley

Just like to add, excellent restores Smiley

Thanks ever so much Evie they are really excellent restores
I am going to try and put the restored photos side by side with other Dixon's to try and look for similarities.
Ian was an absolute star when I met him in Keswick - he was so very helpful. I also have quite a few of his books.
