Marriage of Frances Brown and Alfred Green
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 13:26 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I am trying to find a marriage of a Frances Elizabeth Brown and an Alfred Green. I'm not sure when they exactly got married and where they were married.  They have a daughter Ada, who was born in September 1878, in East Maidstone.  Ada's birth certificate states her father Alfred is a Cattle Salesman.

Ada's place of birth is given as 26 Perry Street,  East Maidstone.  When searching the 1881 Census, Florence Green, aged 10 is listed as living at this address, with a John and Ellen Sargent.  John Sargeant's occupation is given as a Gate Keeper Hill Prison.  Am not sure if Florence is a child of Frances and Alfred.  If she is then possibly Frances and Alfred may have married around 1869/1870.  The 1871 Census gives details of a Florence Green (10 months living with a different family).  Nurse Child is given for Florence.

I'm struggling with this one  Undecided

I can't see a marriage for an Alfred GREEN to a Frances BROWN on the Mid Kent Marriage index

http://woodchurchancestry.org.uk/midkentmarriages/index.php

Searching FreeBMD doesn't show any either although there a couple of incomplete entries.

In 1871 Florence was born in Chatham but in 1881 it says Maidstone  Undecided

There is an Alfred GREEN living In King Street, Maidstone with his wife Elizabeth (both aged 25) and son, Afred W aged 1. Alfred senior is a cook & baker in the county prison.

The Mid Kent Marriage Index has this marriage:

10 Oct 1869 Alfred Stephen Dartnell GREEN to Elizabeth Martha SAMPSON at All Saints, Maidstone.

Not sure all this helps  Huh

Thank you bearkat.  Will keep what you have suggested in mind.

Reason I'm looking at this family is that I have been looking for an Ada Smith, born late 1880's in the Maidstone area. She is my grandmother.  She does not have a birth certificate and has never mentioned anything about her parents to her children. Have ruled out lots of Ada Smiths but of interest is an Ada Smith living with a family in the 1891 Census.  Ada is 13 years old and listed as daughter to Charles Smith (62 year old Beer Retailer) and Mary A Smith (aged 55).

Backtrack to 1881 and Ada Green aged 2 is with Charles Smith (out of employ baker) and Mary Ann. Could Ada Smith 1891 be Ada Green 1881?  Possibly Charles and Mary Ann adopted Ada.

Thought I would investigate Ada Green further to find out anything about her, but am not having a lot of luck.  Have a birth certificate with parents details but am not able to find out anything about them.

An update on Frances Brown and Alfred Green and children.

I have a birth certificate for Ada Green (born 20/9/1878) parents listed as Alfred Green and Frances Elizabeth Green formerly Brown.   Ada is not living with parents in 1881 and 1891.  In 1881 is with Charles and Mary Ann Smith listed as a visitor, aged 2.  In 1891 an Ada Smith, aged 13, is living with Charles and Mary Ann Smith.

I sent away for a birth certificate for a Florence Green (born 23/5/1970) parents listed as Alfred Green and Frances Elizabeth Green formerly Brown.  Florence is not with parents in 1871 and 1881.  In 1871 is with a family and is listed as "Nurse child" and in 1881 is with another family as a boarder.  In 1891 have not found her possibly because she would be a servant somewhere.

I have recently come across a marriage certificate for Florence Green and Arthur Abnett in 1892 in Woolwich.  On the certificate there is a * in the father's name column and in the marriage states "Illegitimate child - father not known".  The place of residence on the certificate is that where Charles, Mary Ann and Ada Smith are living in 1891.  A witness to the marriage is also Ada Smith.
