Fr Bernard Egan, RC Chaplain 2 Para
« on: Wednesday 07 March 07 17:10 UTC (UK) »

My grandfather Edward "Teddy" Hughes served with the 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment from 1943.  Teddy was from an Irish Catholic family who'd left Co Mayo in the late 1920s for Burnley in Lancashire.  The Roman Catholic chaplain for 2 Para was Father Bernard Mary Egan.  Can anyone tell me anything at all about him?  Is he still alive?  I've tried searching for him on the internet and in the website of the Catholic Church, with no results.

thanks,

Mrs Lizzy  Smiley

Hi,

You will find a biography for Father Egan on Mark Hickman's site concerning Arnhem and 2 Para here:

Hi,

Thought it took you to the relevant page, however, it seems that it doesn't, so go to biographies and then look under 2 Para.

Hi,

It's a long time since you posted your question but I came across it by chance while doing a google search.

For what it's worth Father Egan was the headmaster of Wimbledon College Preparatory School (better known as Donhead). I attended that school from 1968 - 1973. He was an austere and on the surface a slightly arrogant man but had a redeeming self-deprecating sense of humour. I think he had a commitment to fairness which schoolboys appreciate.  Egan was a Jesuit so you would probably need to access their records rather than the general records of the RC Church

Egan retired around 1970 and I believe he died in the late 1980s. My mother attended his funeral (Sacred Heart Church, Wimbledon, SW19);  she gave me a fulsome report of the service. The Paras sent a bugler along; he played The Last Post - as one would expect but as the final notes faded away he broke into Reveille (I understand at Egan's request to symbolise his belief in eternal life).

I don't know if you are still monitoring this but if you would like more info reply and if I see your reply I shall try and respond but I am not a regular visitor to this site so no promises!
