Hi

I wonder if his name has been transcribed wrong Undecided Having said that it is not an unusual name. I wonder if he had a middle name and is using that?

How did you find out he was in the Boer war in 1901?

So he must be somewhere, unless of course he was in a different regiment at that time.

Hi Evie,

Don't have written proof, not with his family on 1901 census and he received the Queens & Kings South Africa Medals. Extract below

Queen's South Africa Medal or QSA ‎was awarded to military personnel who served in the Boer War in South Africa between October 11, 1899 and May 31, 1902.

The King's South Africa Medal or KSA was awarded to all troops who served in the Boer War in South Africa on or after 01 January1902, and completed 18 months service before 01 June1902. The medal was not issued alone but always with the Queen's South Africa Medal or QSA.

Hi Osprey

Maybe he also served in 1st bn WR - worth looking into Undecided

Thank you both

When searching WW1 records you need to search for Welsh Regiment. The use of Welch was not re-introduced until the 1920s.

Ken

That is interesting as the transcript I have in 1911 for this regiment says Welch Undecided so at that time was it Welch then did they change it to Welsh for WW1?

Hi Evie

Very interesting. They were 're-spelt' in 1921 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welch_Regiment, so either they were a bit slow in transcribing the census, or the transcriber was a bit old.

In the 1844 Army List they (the 41st Regiment) are Welch, but by 1850 they were Welsh. Being now the Royal Regiment of Wales, makes things are lot easier, although it took the British army 70 odd years to fully adopt the Gregorian calendar.

Hi

Ken - thank you for your reply Smiley

Osprey - I was googling yesterday about the Welsh Regiments and came across I think it was the Great War forum.

There was a thread on there and a soldiers reg number was 8758, the person thought that their relative had joined in 1914 but this person who was answering the query was able to tell them when the soldier had actually joined the regiment by his number. I cannot remember exactly but it was something like 1905 ish. Are you able to do this with Thomas's number?

Hi everyone,

Just looked back on info. I had for T. Jones - all info. previously given from the picture of him in his uniform 1918 - then with help set about looking for a notification of him having received his MM & MM bar.

I'm hoping the T JONES found in L.G. with reg. number is correct, didn't come across any others Undecided

The medal/roll cards for T Jones Welsh 5975 are

MM (FRANCE) Jones T L/Sjt. 2nd Bn. Welsh R dated 14/9/1916 awarded Bar 9/12/1916

15* (Welsh R Cpl. 5975), VM, BM (Welsh R Sjt. 5975) theatre of warfirst served (1) France date entry 24/11/1914

Ken kindly helped me out last year to find him in L.G and regarding rank, he was
Corporal when he entered theatre to earn 1914-1915 *
L/Sjt. when he earned bar to MM and
Sjt. at the end when he earned BWM & VM

So it looks are if he was in 1st Bn. Welsh R Boer War then 2nd Bn. Welsh R.

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to mark this request as completed - even though I havn't found him on 1911 census.

A paper clipping found that my grandmother had kept about her brother's death.

Thomas enlisted 1899 Welsh Regiment, served in three wars, Boer War, WW1 and in the last war was a Lieutenant 16th Bn. Glamorgan Home Guard.
He received 10 decorations, including MM and bar, Italian Medal Militaire, KSA & QSA.

He was an Inspector since 1926 on the Cardiff Corporation Tramways and died aged 64, he's survived by a widow and 1 son.

Thanks to everyone who contributed - appreciated  Smiley
