George Easton 42nd Reg around 1831
« on: Monday 14 September 09 13:18 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone,

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction please.  I have come across my GG Grandfather William Easton's death cert - who died in Glasgow 1877 aged 53.  The cert gives his father as George Easton who was a sergeant in the 42nd Foot.  I have no other details on my George.  Since locating William's death cert I have found a poor law application for William and on it is says that William was born in Jersey in "barracks" and that his father was a sergeant.  Is there anyway that I can find out more information on George?  I have tried to locate George and his wife Hannah Welford/Helford/Hilford on the 1841 census but have come up blank for Scotland and Channel Islands.  I have also looked at the NA site in the military section but just get absolutely lost.  Can anyone advise where I should look next.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Talia.

Hi Talia

The 42nd Foot were in the Ionian Islands for the 1841 Census, and Bermuda for the 1851. They would have kept a Depot in the UK (which could have included Ireland of course). If you have Findmypast you can search for BMDs in the overseas/regimental section. There was another section for chaplains returns for the Ionian Islands. They are not complete however.

If George was discharged before the end of 1854 then his papers have been lost. You can search for surviving papers for men discharged before the end of 1854 in the NA catalogue - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp. You will however find him in the muster books (WO12) starting with the one for William's birth - 1877 minus 53 = 1824. These record were each man was on the first of each month. Army records do not include any FH information in this period.

Hello Ken,

Thanks for replying, your advice is much appreciated.  I will have a look at the NA as suggested and also the other link/sites you provided to see what I can find.   If I get stuck may I come back to you? I not very good at navigating my way round the NA site!!!

Thanks again for your help.

Talia.
