Ann Wood
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 14:07 UTC (UK) »

Hello, Can someone help me find Ann Wood b. 1809 but gives birthplaces of Haile, Egremont, Beckermont and Whitehaven. There is a chance she might be an unrecorded daughter of John Wood and Anne. Ann Wood married John Iredale 19 Dec 1835 at Haile. Regards Bullamore

Rosie

Hi Bullamore,
Thank you for the pm - I was just hoping that you had seen the marriage entry and that the witnesses would help.  Never mind, Back to the drawing board   Grin

Hi Bullamore Smiley

I have seen this request on several boards around the net ... I will only make replies here.  John IREDALE probably died at Moor Row (one of your other questions).  It's between Cleator Moor and Whitehaven.  Map http://tinyurl.com/lpsg5f

If you keep using PMs, then keeping it private will mean only one person knows what you have to say.  If you post on the board, I think you will have more chance of someone finding an answer.

Hi Geoffe, Thank You. I could not read all the inscription on the gravestone.,could just make out  Moor R. I'll start having a look at Wigton. Why do you think that her birth maybe unrecorded and no baptism? Bullamore.

I also received a PM from Bullamore.

Thanks, but as Geoff said it is advisable to post your replies on the thread, then everyone can read them and chip in and help.  Wink

It also makes it easier for yourself (as you do not have to give the same information more than once on the public board and in the private PM) and it makes it easier for the person you have sent the PM to (as they do not have to tell the board what was in the PM you sent). I hope that explanation isn't too confusing ....   Tongue

This is the PM I received from Bullamore:
Hi, A friend sent me this information. Ann Iredale(Wood). I have not got and see on various census she is consistant that she was born c.1809 but gives birthplaces of Haile, Egremont, Beckermont and Whitehaven. Therefore, Esther Wood b. 1811 at Haile, her sister? I can't find no baptism. Bullamore

Generally PM's are for exchanging personal information, email address etc, that you do not want everyone to read.

Now to try to answer your question ... I am not familiar with that area of Cumberland, but I know that places of birth can vary on censuses. Sometimes the name of the parish is given,  sometimes it might be the village they were born in, sometimes the nearest large town ... so  perhaps that is what has happened here. Have you looked at a map of the area to see if all these places are close to each other? A particular example I know of, the person was born on what can only be described as a farmstead, so they gave the name of the farm as the place of birth (which it was).

In case it isn't clear (and it wasn't to me) these were her siblings, see
