McAfee problem
« on: Monday 17 August 09 09:37 UTC (UK) »

Hi.
I have Windows XP with McAfee security.
McAfee has been no trouble up until a couple of days ago.
It now keeps telling me I am not protected. "Fix" problem has no effect.  I then downloaded  McAfee virtual technician.  This seems to fix the problem but after some minutes I again am getting the "not protected" notice.
Dont really want to remove then reinstall...afraid I may make a real mess up as I am not very computer literate.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks.  Dud.

Microsoft recently release a large number of security updates for Windows XP SP3 and I'm wondering whther that triggered this problem?  It could be anything though - including a false ppositive - where a a piece of harmless software has been incorrectly identified as a virus.

You will need to check the name of the so-called virus that it keeps finding in order to solve the problem.  Is there a log containing the name of the virus?

Open McAfee up and see where it stores information such as logs so you can identify the name of the so-called virus.  Then do a Google search on that name to see if other people have the same problem and how they fixed it.

Hi. Thanks for your reply.   Virtual technician tells me DAT out of date. It fixes it for me and I get a pop up to say everything is updated.  Then after a few minutes, as I said it reports that I am not protected again.
Will do as you suggest. Thanks for your help.  Dud.

Hi Dud

I've been having this problem for weeks - at home, at work and on a relative's computer.  We use XP or Vista, so it isn't related to OS (except Microsoft is a constant!)

Irritating indeed!

I'd be glad to know how to fix it too!

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

i had a similar problem last year or early this year. i am running vista and kept getting problems where the latest updates from microsoft wouldnt install and mcafee would say im not protected.
i had to turn the fire walls off to install the updates then things would be ok. eventually after a week or so we left the mcafee firewall as the only one running and everything worked fine since

Hi Arranroots.

Absolute pain isnt it.  When I Google the problem it appears to be a fault by McAfee.  When I contacted their help line I was sent an e-mail telling me how to
remove the existing program and reinstall it. Easier said than done.  They seem to think we all have a degree in computers.

Perth Tiger

I notice your remark about turning off the firewalls.  I always understood that you only ever run ONE firewall because running more than one causes conflict such as the problem you originally experienced.  Microsoft's Security Centre stresses this fact.

Hi All.

Have solved the problem but it meant removing the old McAfee program and reinstalling.

I've just had the same problem with CA Suite. It hadn't had an auto update for 6 days and each time I tried to manually do it, I got a message saying an error had occurred and try later.

It also decided that the Anti-Spyware part of the progam wasn't installed. Odd, as it has been for over a year.

I had to go to the CA website and re-install the progam.

I have XP, with the latest updates, also.
