Joseph Blakeley 1871

I am trying to trace my great grandfather Joseph Blakeley in 1871.
Born in 1846 at Water Street Chorley
Married Jane Heaton in 1868 at Christ Church Ince in Makerfield.
I can find him on 1881/1891 and 1901 census but only Jane and his two children aged 3 years and 7 months are shown on 1871.
On Ancestry several people are showing him as being in Toxteth Park County Prison in 1871 but I am not convinced this is him as his place of birth is given as Lancaster Bolton.  Is it possible census could be showing wrong place of birth and this actually is him, if not, where is he?

His occupation in 1881 and 1891 is a coal miner and the 1871 shows prisoner Joseph as a collier

Joseph the prisoner is 23 in 1871 which is only 2yrs less than his true age

The 1861 has a Joseph Blakely b Darcy Lever (in Bolton) but he would have been 26 in 1871

I notice that wife Jane has an occupation in 1871 which, given she had a 7mth old baby would be rare if she had a husband supporting her

I suspect Joseph was a prisoner in 1871

Hello,
Are his parents Matthew and Mary? If so they are living in Bolton in 1851 and his two younger siblings are shown as born in Bolton so I would go along with Carole's view that, yes it is him in 1871.

Yes his parents are Matthew and Mary - so I will assume Prisoner Joseph and Great grandfather Joseph are one and the same.  Although my grandchildren think it cool to have a "jail bird" in the family I didn't wish to make him a prisoner if he wasn't.

Thanks for your help I will now assume that prisoner Joseph and great grandfather Joseph are one and the same.  This will please my grandchildren, who think it's really cool to have a prisoner in the family.
