Thomas Oliphant Bruce 1877-1917 - Marriage

Hi everyone

I'm trying to trace a marriage for Thomas Oliphant Bruce to a lady called Martha that took place in Hightown, Manchester.

Thomas was born about 1877 and was killed in action on 30 Nov 1917 in Cambrai, France in World War 1.  His parents were Fotheringham Rankin Bruce and Christina Drever - families with Scottish connections to Caithness and Orkney.  All I have for Martha is that she was born about 1879 in Manchester.

Anyone able to help? Undecided

There is a 24 year-old Martha Lewis (b Manchester) living in Manchester in 1901 (RG13/3769). I imagine the name is common, but Thomas and family are nearby.

Douglas W Bruce (mother's maiden name Lewis)  born in Salford in Sep 1911 and Harold L Bruce (mmn Lewis) in Jun 1914 are likely to be sons.

Given the Scottish connections Edith Inman Bruce (1906) and John Angus Bruce (1908) look good bets, but mother's maiden names aren't given before 1911.

Look as if we/I might be getting somewhere with this one!  I think you may both have hit the nail on the head - at or about the same time Smiley

There are a few 'researchers' woriking on this family as far afield as Canada and Australia and they'll be delighted with your finds ... as am I Grin

How I wish the records south of the border were as easy to search as ours here in 'Bonnie Scotland'

Hello,

Thomas was my Great Grandfather- he married Martha Lewis 1877-1940. Martha was daughter of Edward ( b 1841 St Asaph in Wales and d 1896 in Manchester) and Elizabeth Lewis ( b1843 Mold in Wales and d1891 Wales)

They had 5 Children Winnifred Lewis Bruce, Christina Caroline Drever Bruce, Robert Bruce, Wallace Bruce and Harold Lewis Bruce.
