Hi,
well it looks as though it's one of life's mysteries  Huh very sad and frustrating.
The links are so strong but I suppose it's best not to accept them- wonder where he was in 1851?

I saw a Samuel with a strange name in Yorkshire, I think, working but the name was definitely not a mistranscription.

Then I wondered if he was off working on the railway somewhere but a national search didn't reveal anything either.

Yes. I may just have to accept it all as a mystery. Further interest is added by Mary and Robert Whitfield calling their children Samuel and Mary Jane. Any descendants out there who could help? Or Unsworth descendants (mary's 2nd marriage) from John Arthur's marriage to Margaret Foster?
