Hi,
You could get his birth year and quarter , provided he was born after1837, by looking him up on freebmd site. You could also look there to see if he married.
Have you looked in any census for him? The 1881 census is online and free to search- go to familyserach and the link is on lhs of homepage.
If he was still alive and in England that would give some info.
Earlier census info would have to come from thsoe with data base access- sorry but I don't have that.

Do you have any further information on John?
Below is the only census I can see with a John W so he is apparently just using John which makes it harder to find him without further info.
This may or may not be your John

ADDED...no joy with either birth on lancsbmd...I was hoping for one to say John W Christian....you may be lucky if someone can find these 2 on Ancestry...one may have the missing W ..
Mariacs find in the census would suggest it is the 1839 birth because it states him being 21 in the 1861 census..and as there was only ONE John Christian born in Liverpool in 1839 it would have to be your JohnChristian in Cumberland in 1861,,,....good luck...allan

Hi - as I couldn't figure out how to send a private message I hope you don't mind if I interrupt a bit. I am also looking for a chap and fam from Liverpool with the last name Christian, am hoping you have this elusive great grandfather on your tree. His name is William Robert Christian, his Mom is listed as Elisa, an aunt Eliza McLean and he married a Fanny Ethel _____ in ~ 1899. He was born in 1878 in Liverpool. I know he moved on into Wales once he married. Any Luck? GG
