Maiden and 1st married name in Index of marriages
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 13:14 UTC (UK) »

In the Civil Registration Index of marriages I have just found a couple of cases where a woman marrying for a second time is recorded twice, once with her maiden name and also as a separate entry with her married name from her first marriage. The single entry for the spouse of the second marriage has both maiden name and married name of the women record (recorded as "name 1" or "name 2".

Is this the norm or have I just been lucky? The maiden names were rare and easily found, the married names were widely used and so the second marriages would probably have remained undiscovered. the years were 1932 and 1953.

The only ones I know of & have checked (1921 & 1981) only use the married name, but in both cases the local county BMD site has both maiden & first married name - I've seen quite a few on the local sites where they use an * to indicate the person has used more than one surname - often a previous married name, sometimes a step-parent's surname.
