Help please - I am trying to find Dudley Clifford Hardy in the 1871 census.
He was born in 1858 in Kensington. In 1861 he is with his parents, George and Julia, brother Lewis Rossi and various servants in Lonsdale Villas in Kensington. His father is a Woollen Draper.
In 1871, the father is living on his own in Paddington with a cook. He is a woollen wareshouseman. The mother, Julia, is staying with her father, Edward Clifford. Dudley's two brothers, Lewis and Gratton, are with her.
In 1881, Dudley is back with his mother and father.
In 1891, he disappears again!! The father, George, has died. Julia, the mother, is living in Portsea, with son Gratton. The other brother is probably in New Zealand.
But I can't find any sign of Dud! I thought that with this unusual name I would find him easily, but no
I suppose he could be at school somewhere.......
I would be very grateful for any help.
Many thanks
Tilly

given that the lads were only a year apart, its most likely that they were all together - so just maybe he was missed off the Schedule in 1871 ....
tried all combos - with and w/o surname, just initials, pupil etc but
will try 1891 next

Hello Past Master
Thank you VERY much for that!!
I think you are right - the one in the Convalescent Hospital must be him; I've just checked and he died in 1899...... obviously suffered from poor health of some sort!
Maybe he was in hospital in 1871 too, or, as you suggested, they just forgot about him! Poor old Dud
Again - many thanks for the information.
Tilly
