john james phillipson
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 21:06 UTC (UK) »

Hi can anyone help me, my granfather was william phillipson and according to his marriage certificate he was born in 1900.  now his father was john james phillipson according to the same marriage certificate, now i have searched all over to match the two together with these dates with no luck not even in the 1911 census, but i did find a john j phillipson with a son william but he was born in 1896. does anyone think that this is the man i am looking for.
On williams marriage certificate john j phillipson is a coalmine overseer, and the john j phillipson i was looking at on the 1901 census was a coalyard worker at that time.
Is it possible to find out who worked in the mines in those days.
Any help would be much appreciated

There is no William Phillipson b 1900 Durham - so the 1896 William looks a possibility

Who are the witnesses on the marriage cert?
So you know of any siblings William had??

Any other information??

hi, dont know of any siblings, in fact dont know much at all,
william was married to agnes andrew phillipson who died in 1945 leaving two children sarha and george both of which are now dead so unable to ask them
the witnesses at the wedding of william and agnes were henrey henderson and isabella davidson. now if i remember right i did see a davidson on a census record somewhere and he was john james phillipsons nethew.
but it may not be the same one at all i have looked at so many i forget what i have looked at.

So William married Agnes A Wright in 1931 -is that correct??

and William's age was given 31???

I wonder if he served in the armed forces??? That could be a reason for him marrying late

How old was Agnes Huh?

The Overseer was in authority in a coal mine. I think it was name for manager of the mine ?

Janeann, Is this the same family you found in 1911?

1901
5 Bridge St
Helmington Row
Durham

John J Phillipson head mar 31 cokeyard filler b Dur Grahamsley
Mary E wife mar 29 b Dur Sacriston
Margaret daur 10 b Dur Crook
Francis son 7 b Sunnybrow
William son 5 b SUnnybrow
David brother single 15 brickworks lab B Crook
RG13/4650/92/1

John J might have worked his way up the ladder to a supervisory role by the time of William's marriage.  Undecided

An overseer is subordinate to the manager of a mine - but he would have most probably worked his way up through many aspects of mining (1900's)

And John J in 1881 with his family:
83 Wheatbottom
Crook

William Philipson head mar 43 labourer b Cumberland Allstone
Ann wife mar 38 b Dur Barnard Castle
Thomas W son 17 colliery lab b Crook
John J son 10 scholar b Crook
Edward son 5 b Crook
RG/4925/16/25

[There IS another John J Philipson of similar age on the 1881 census, so further confirmation is required to discover which is the correct one]

thanks suzard for the idea that william phillipson could have been in the military.  It could be a possibility as when he got married he was living in lodgings, this is the information i received from someone about the address he lived at.

William's birth certificate will give you his mother's maiden surname, which might come in handy ...  Wink
