In search of the Rowley Sewing Machine
« on: Sunday 30 August 09 23:37 UTC (UK) »

Hi, My ancestor Richard Rowley came to Australia abt 1840. His wife was surpose to follow him with the children, but didn't so he remarried and had another family. One of these Rowley rellies invented the Rowley Sewing machine.HuhHuh? So the story goes. I haven't been able to find this bod. I have no names only that I have a Family I don't know and would love to find.
Anyone out there who is connected to these Rowleys or know anything about the Sewing Machine, I would really like to find them. My Great Grandmother, Alice Maud Church, nee Rowley was going to try to find them MANY years ago, but didn't know how. Any help would be very much appreciated,      Chris.

There's an ad in the following paper for a Rowley Hand Sewing Machine.  Might be the same one?

http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/2606004?searchTerm=rowley+sewing+machine

And a Samuel Rowley is listed in the 1882 Sands Directory (Newtown) as a sewing machine agent.

Hi Chris

This is likely useless info, but I spotted the following on New Zealand's "trademe" website, for an auction which took place in August 2007.

It didn't state the vintage of the "New Century treadle sewing machine" ... but it gave a description of a copper disc name tag on it  ....

"S. ROWLEY and Co, Queen Victoria Markets, George Street, Sydney".

(Just thought the address might be of some help to you ?)

Hi, Thank you everyone. Wow, this machine really does exist. I wonder if this Samuel Rowley is my Rellie. What has thrown me is my Grandmother said the family was in Vict. No wonder I wasn't having any luck. You are wonderful people. It is odd because my Great Grandparents and my Grandmother lived in Sydney after they came out from England in 1913 and it was on their doorstep, so to speak. My Great Grandfather worked for David Jones. Must have been blind or just didn't know. Samuel must be the son of Richard Rowley.HuhHuh?? I will be trying to fit it all together, now. Gee Wizz. This is wonderful.    Ever greatfull, Chris.
