I have a census entry of one of my ancestors brothers, but I'm a bit confused as to whether it is actually the right one. I have been given the following:
Joseph Clarke Burton married Mary Bell, Sneinton St Matthias 11/07/1875
1891 RG12 2684 35 17/18 Joseph C Burton head 36 general dealer Nottingham, as were others Mary wife 35 Herbert A son 15 Robert C son 9 Lilian F dau 7 Florence dau 5 Mabel G dau 3 Ann Carter mother wid 64 hosiery mender Ratcliffe Emily Dominick boarder 21 Nottingham
My Joseph Clarke Burton was the son of Samuel Burton and Joseph Ann Clarke and the marriage above seems to suggest that his wife's maiden name was Bell, so who is Ann Carter?! Any suggestions would be most welcome! Did she re-marry after Mary was born?

Hi Suz, Thanks for finding that, it seems like the right Ann Carter and she was a mother, but she doesn't seem to be related to anyone in the house she was in in 1891 still Is it possible that Joseph married 2 Mary's? The first one a Bell, the second a Carter? But then I would expect to see a Mary Cater on that 1871 census entry?

Hi Suz, Joseph is Mary's husband. In 1891 Joseph Clark Burton was living with Mary Burton (nee Bell) and on the entry it says "Ann Carter, mother, Wid, Ratcliff" I want to know who she is as in theory it should be either Ann Bell or Ann Burton. Joseph's mother was Joseph Ann Burton (nee Clarke) so it's clearly not her, so I guess it must be Mary's mother, but why would she call herself Carter and not Bell?

sorry I didn't explain myself too well
I think Ann Carter is actually Joseph's mother in law and Mary's mother
She was married to William Bell he must have died and she remarried to Thomas Carter
I'll get a few more facts together for you
Back soon

I hadn't looked at 1881 census - assumed you had - but that spells it out loud and clear that Ann Carter is the mother of mary!!!
1881 1a Upper Eldon St Sneinton Nottm
Ann Carter head Widow 54 Hose mender Nottingham J.C.Burton son in law M 26 Gen lab nottingham Mary Burton daughter married 25 Nottingham H. A. Burton grandson5 Nottingham mary M Day Boarder U 24 Jennier Derby RG11 3347 48 37
so Ann Exon married William Bell in 1854 they had children Mary, Richard, Charles and frederick William died 1863 Ann remarried to thomas carter 1868
Do you think we have sorted it?
