Woodcock in Witney 1851
« on: Saturday 12 July 08 21:07 UTC (UK) »

I have been unable to trace the Woodcock family in the 1851 Census. In 1841 they lived at Church Green, Witney and were:

John Woodcock 36, Parish Clerk
Fanny 39
John 8
Charles 6
Henry 2
Eliza 2
All born in county except John snr.

Fanny died in 1846 and later that year John married Mary Ann Flexney. In 1861 the family had moved to Bristol and lived in Redcliffe Parade where they were:

John Woodcock, 54 National School Master
Mary A Woodcock w 37
William 17 (poss 19) s Iron foundry (?) labourer
Agnes 11 d Scholar
Frederick 8 s Scholar
Alfred 6 s Scholar
Albert 3 s
Susanna 1 d

All born in Witney, excepting the four youngest children, born Bristol. Also in the household are other members of Mary Ann's Flexney family. I cannot find them in 1851 however. The birth of Agnes was registered in 1850 in Witney, so they may have moved soon after. Can anyone find them please?

Hi Steve ...

Sorry to say that I have tried every possible permutation to try and find this family (even in Wales) - but no luck.

Unfortunately, they may just be one of the families who slipped through the net or were "on the road" on census night!

Hi Pennie

Thanks for trying - it does seem strange they can't be found. You would think a Parish Clerk/Schoolmaster was unlikely to be missed off; possibly they are just missing from the indexes - do you use Ancestry? - I've discovered a whole street missing in the past from their images/indexes

Thanks Debbie,

I think there were one or two Woodcock families around - I'm only troubled by the fact of John being given as "not born in county" in 1841, but born Witney in all later Censuses - I'm sure it is the same family as I've found in 1861 and later

Not sure if you've got this info but from parish marriage and baptism transcripts for Witney St. Mary

John Woodcock batchelor mar Fanny Brown spinster 15 Jan 1825 both of this parish as no other place named.  Witnesses William Lloyd and William Ellis

John Woodcock b 3 Aug 1805 son of Henry and Jane
Henry Woodcock mar Jane Akers 21 Jun 1801

Fanny Brown b 7 Jul 1801 dau of Joseph and Lidey
John Brown b 7 Jul 1801 son of Joseph and Lidey
Joseph Brown b 27 Apr 1792 son of Joseph and Lydia
Sarah Brown b 28 Dec 1793 dau of Joseph and Lydia
Mary Brown b 17 Jan 1796 dau Joseph and Lydia
Hannah Brown b 7 Oct 1804 dau Joseph and Lydia
Joseph Brown b 19 Jul 1807 son Joseph and Lydia

Couldn't find marriage of Joseph and Lydia.

Hope this is of some help if you haven't already got it.

Thanks Steph

That looks like the right family - i must add that they are not my ancestors (I'm from the Flexney family) & I was really looking for 1851 to help track down Mary Ann & possible siblings, but it does show John was born in Witney
