Can anyone help me identify this soldier? It is the clearest photo I have, perhaps someone can recognise the uniform or badges? It has been suggested he may be a Bandsman.

Thanks for any help you can offer. Man may have links to New Zealand and England.
Regards, purplepassion.

Thanks for your help, unfortunately I don't have the original copy. I don't think a photographer was mentioned.

Thanks for your help, I will look into the 18th regiment and see what I find.
Regards, Jude.
just googled uniforms of irish regiments for the time period suggested previously, and looking at the collar it looks like it could be a crown badge on it. Also with you saying that it has something to do with ireland and new zealand i think it may be someone from the 18th regiment of foot the Royal Irish. The 2nd Battlion apparently moved from New Zealand to Australia in March 1870 and began its return to England in August 1870 and they were the last British Foot( infantry) regiment to serve in Australia. Have a look at this it gives some basic info:- http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~garter1/18thfoot.htm

Jude,
The crown is his insignia of rank, prior to 1881 commissioned ranks wore their designation of rank on their collar, it is not a regimental collar badge.
Given the time-frame I have previously given the ranks were as such:
Ensign - no badge. Sub-Lieutenant (latter 2nd Lieutenant) - star (commonly known as a pip.). Lieutenant - Crown. Captain - Crown & star. Major - Star, but would an elaborate collar braiding design. Lieutenant-Colonel - Crown, with more braiding on the collar. Colonel - Crown & star, again with more braiding on the collar.
The only thing that would reveal the identity of this officer's regiment would be a close-up on the buttons on the original photograph.

...Neither praise nor blame add to their epitaph but like it be simple as that which marked Thermopylae. Tell it in England those that pass us by, here, faithful to their charge, her soldiers lie.
