I've just received a marriage certificate from 1842, and I need help with the occupation of the bride's father please.
Groom and bride's residence were both given as Haslar Barracks and they were married in Gosport.
I've blown up the image but I still can't make it out, so any help will be appreciated.

Hi Dee
Couldn't sleep!
Is it Brass foundry or founder
Gadget
Added - if it was military related, there is/was a Royal Brass Foundry at Woolwich where they made brass cannon:
http://www.johnsmilitaryhistory.com/woolwich2.html
This also has a bit about gunfounding at Portsmouth

Hi Dee
Looks like Brass Foundry to me looks like the tail of a "y" but the line in the middle cuts it out. Those "S's" always got me in the beginning
Cheers KHP

Hi Dee, This is a hard one... if it is brass founder that would imply he owned the foundry...does this fit with census info?
The last two letters of word one seem to be ss.. could be brass found??? It seems a longer word than founder because there is the tail of it which crosses the vertical line.

I think it's just brass foundry....... as in that was where he worked rather than his occupation?? Make sense??
Nah, didn't think I would.......rarely do

Thanks Gadget, KHP, Charlotte, and Karenlee......much appreciated.
I had considered Brass.....but couldn't make out the Foundry part. After your suggestions.....and another look at some of the "d"s elsewhere on the certificate......I too can see the word Foundry.
Now if only I could find either Samuel or daughter Harriet Richmond in 1841!

Hi Dee
I looked for them after my middle of the night visit but wasn't sure where they might be. Couldn't see them in Hampshire
Do you have their ages/places of birth?

Gadget,
The earliest census image I have for Mathew Adams is 1861. By then Harriet (Richmond) had died.
In 1851 Mathew was serving overseas, and Harriet had gone with him, as I have the births of some of the children in Ireland, Corfu, Gibralter etc.
Who knows where Mathew Adams (father James, yeoman)was in 1841, but I thought I might have been able to find Harriet and father Samuel Richmond.
They're proving elusive.
Witnesses to the marriage were W Richmon and Mary A Richmon.
OOPS....forgot to say....1861 has Mathew Adams born in Ireland.

Hadn't thought of that.
Where to start?
I did have this thread about him some time ago.....
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,288284.0.html
Is that the information that could be available from the Archives?

Dee, The Attestation Papers are held at Kew- at least that where the originals of those I have are.
The one thing you need to know to get hold of them is the Regiment he was in. Someone arranged to have the one I wanted copied- it involved photographas it was fragile. It came out marvellously.
I've no idea how much it cost so it would come down to how important the info on it would be to you. In my case, it was my2Xgreatgradfather who I'd been hunting for years, so worth the money. charlotte

As I'm searching for a friend, Charlotte, I'm not sure if she would be able to spend too much on getting the papers. But maybe I can make a few more enquiries and see.

Dee, Sorry ... I didn't answer your question
I don't know that the militia would have such attestation papers- my man was in a Regiment of the Line after having been in WRY militia. The Papers mention his militia service but only in so far as it preceeds his army service. The Papers listed in detail his army service and where he was wounded and how he cam to be a Chelsea Out Pensioner... It gave date of enlistment, descript of his physical appearance etc.
To get the copy of the Papers someone had to go the Kew and find them then apy to have them photpgraphed and mailed 0ut. They would only mail them to a UK address- this was c. 1995- things may have changed since then.
Kew would probably search for the Papers but for a fee...so it depends how pivotal they are.
Pity we can't just pop across to Kew for a week
