Can I wake him up, Mum?

A week at least, Charlotte. Wouldn't that be marvellous?
We believe that Mathew Adams was a pensioner.
However, I've spent some time on http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ this morning , and maybe....just maybe.... if we are patient, the records will be digitised.

Dee, by "pensioner" I assume you mean a Chelsea Out pensioner?
Yes?

Yes, Charlotte......I can't recall where we found that, as I have handed on most of what I found to my friend. I'll have to ask her when I am next in contact.
I've just remembered.....it was recorded on his death certificate!

So he was seriously wounded in action and shipped out to Chelsea Hospital then when better sent home on a life long pension, the amount of cash paid as pension being related to his length of service, if I have it all correct.
It is possible to lookup the accounts of the pensions and see whuch pension office was the one to which the claiment went quarterly to collect the dosh. I traced my pensioner from Halifax to Preston by the pension records. From memory[?] I looked up an LDS film to see these accounts.
There are Chelsea Outpension things online I believe... and it would be worth putting his name in to the A2A site or TNA is it called now? I found my Chelsea OutPensioner there..

Hi Dee
I was able to order the records of three of mine from NA. I think it cost about £10 each. If the index is online, you can just order them and they'll photocopy and send.

If that's the cost, Gadget, then it's perfectly reasonable and I think would be manageable for my friend.
So far I've not found an index though.
And of course, just because something was on a death certificate, doesn't make it so. On the plus side, the informant was one of his middle aged spinster daughters who came to Australia with him, so one would expect that she knew.

Hi Dee
If they're there, they'll be in WO97 or WO121
I've tried on various combinations of his name and just his initial but nothing's coming up. When I use just Adam(s) I get too many pages.
I think there might have been a block of missing records - I recall that when I was looking for an ancestor of Mr Gadget's, his weren't there

Thanks for trying! It would just be lovely to find more, but if I don't so be it.
Genevieve is absolutely thrilled with what we've found so far. It's been a very interesting journey. She knew that Matthew Adam's son (Her grandfather) came out to South Australia, but had no idea that Matthew and several daughters also came. And when I found that Matthew had lived all his time here in the little town where she has lived for the past thirty years, and is buried in the local cemetery, we both got goosebumps!

I've put a link to the history of the16th Regiment of Foot on your other thread. It has the various overseas postings so you might be able to find something.
I've got access to the Overseas BMD index, so if you need a search for Harriet's death or children's births, just yell.

Harriet died in 1861 before the census in Worcester. The children's births overseas I found recently.....I've switched subscriptions!
But thanks for the offer.
