Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to find a service record or any other information for the Andrew Allan listed on the Fromelles British Death List. Andrew is a distant relation of mine and was born in Bannockburn 17th Feb 1894 to parents William Allan and Isabella McMaster. The Andrew Allan who died at Fromelles was listed as born and residing in Bannockburn. He died 19th Jul 1916 and was a Sergeant in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 2/6th Battalion. His number was 241891 and he may previously have been 1187 Highland Cyclist Battalion.
I have been contacted by the volunteer group seeking out blood relatives for the DNA testing currently going on to try and identify the dead that have been found in Fromelles and am trying to establish whether the Andrew who died there is indeed my ancestor or not. The problem I have is that 3 Andrew Allans were born in Bannockburn around the same time: one in 1893, mine in 1894 and another in 1895. Thanks for any help.
Regards
Michelle

Hi Gortonboy,
Thanks very much for the links; it seems the Fromelles Andrew is definitely my Andrew Allan then. I saw the medal card on Ancestry but always find them quite difficult to understand. I'm going to contact the MoD about the project but I'm afraid if the DNA testing for it works the same way the the genealogical DNA tests I've read about do I won't be a close enough relative for it to work. If I'm not I've already told the person who contacted me that I will research this line thoroughly and do my best to find someone who is suitable and willing to do the test.
Regards
Michelle

Hi Glen,
Thanks for the links - I will read over them all. I phoned the SPVA this afternoon and they're going to send me out a letter explaining the timescale of things and what's necessary but it's all quite vague about which specific relatives are suitable for the DNA testing at the moment. As I say if it works the way genealogical DNA testing does then I won't be suitable as I'm related to him through his maternal grandfather but it's worth checking.
Regards
Michelle
