Tennent, Thomas. A cabman
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 02:25 BST (UK) »

Hi to all readers

I hope some one out there can assist me with some info' about THOMAS TENNENT who is/was a cabman.  He had a daughter named EDITH, my great grand mother. It is thought that there were 5-7 siblings most of whom died by WW1 (if not all)

Edith was born about 1873 and married in 1902 by which time Thomas was already dead, it is suspected that Thomas may have been from Norfolk but this is far from certain.

Do you know when Edith was bapt', what her mothers name was, any thing about Thomas?  are you related.

Edith married a Alfred Winsor in 1902

The first thing is: in the 1911 census, what is Edith's birthplace listed as?

http://www.1911census.co.uk
 - as far as I can tell, it is "London" at least, don't know if more accurate info is given.

Then: who were the witnesses at the marriage?

The problem with John: John Tennant and wife Edith seem to still be living in the Kensington area in 1901, and in Paddington in 1911. They possibly died in 1919 (John, in Kensington) and 1920 (Edith, in Paddington).

As well as the Edith that Isobel found, there is another living with the Spinks family in 1881 at Golborne Rd. Also in 1881 there is a Thomas Tennant, widowed cab driver, aged 43, b. Longham, Norfolk (at Blagrove Road,  just around the corner).

1871, RG10/1 72/55
Thomas Tennant (indexed as Tenail), 33, cab driver, b. Longham
Susannah, wife, 33, b. Norfolk Colby

Susannah may have died in 1877 in Kensington (freebmd), aged 40.

There may have also been several siblings died young:
e.g. twins Thomas and Susannah, b. Mar quarter 1867, Susannah died Jun quarter Thomas Sep quarter same year.
there are others on freebmd - it is hard to tell which might be theirs.

Thomas is possibly the Thomas Tennant who died aged "53" in 1898 in Kensington.

1861, RG 9/6 48/39 (Paddington) shows  Thomas Tennant, 23, unmarried cab driver b. Swaffham, and (brother?) George, 24, groom b. same place.

1841, Longham HO 107/778/20 6/5
John Tennant, 42, ag lab
Mary, 44
James, 17
Elizabeth, 13
John, 10
Esther, 7
Thomas, 3
George, 1

FreeBMD has two births in Kensington around this time

Jan/Feb/Mar 1873
Kensington 1a 153
Edith Ann Tennant

Jul/Aug/Sep 1872
Kensington 1a 74
Edith Tennant

One will be the dtr of John, the other quite possibly a dtr of Thomas!

Does 'your' Edith have a middle name when she marries?

Getting her birth cert will then give you her mother name and maiden name.

To ALL you helpful souls

Thank you for the time you have spent trying to sort out my family.

To answer the your questions; Edith gave no middle name on her wedd cert', she was residing in Walerton Rd ( as was her groom, different house No)
Wedd' cert' states father as THOMAS TENNANT - cab man - deceased

The witnesses were William Elliott and Lilian Beatrice Winsor and a Frances Dixon.
An aunt who spoke to Edith before she died in1957 recalls that Edith mentioned that her siblings had all died by about the time of WW1, and she wouldn't give their names
Edith's mothers name has never been mentioned to anyone in the family as far as I know

I hope this helps
I live in hope that some one out there has that vital bit of info, or better still is some how related

I think Jorose has already found you the vital bit of info! - in finding Thomas, cab driver and also the other Edith (other than the daughter of John, so by deduction most likely yours) in 1881 with the Spinks.
Her birth cert will confirm if mother is Susannah, and give maiden and any other previous names for mother.

1901 census RG13 18 folio 25
79 Droop Street Paddington
visitor with the Dixons
Edith Tennant 30 Visitor Single Cook domestic Paddington London

1891 census RG12 11 folio 29
18 Leam Road Paddington
Edith Jennant 18  Servant Cook Middlesex

A spelling error on the part of the census enumerator not the census indexer.

A possible marriage for Edith's parents (her birth certificate would give her mother's maiden name).

Marriages Jun 1863
SPOONER  Susanna     Camberwell  1d 843
TENANT  Thomas     Camberwell  1d 843

There are two Susanna Spooners born Coleby Norfolk on the 1861 census both servants in Norfolk, one aged 25 the other aged 18.

Hi Valda

Many thanks, the info looks VERY promising. One niggle though, the 1901 ref' says Edith is 30, how Strong do you think this?, it seems about 2 years out considering earlier census's.

Based on Jorose's post of 2 July referring to 1871 census I am inclined to think that of the two Susannas' you mention, the 25 year old is most likely and thus died about 1877 aged 40. Would you agree?

I think I might just have to try and order a birth cert for Edith ( if one can be found) and see what mothers name is, then a wedding cert' for mother just to find an age

Thanks to you Valda and to ALL other contributors.  Keep it coming,PLEASE

Hi John

lizdb has already supplied you with a likely birth registration

Sep quarter 1872
Kensington 1a 74
Edith Tennant

Census information is only as good as the information which was supplied in the first place by whoever supplied it - not necessarily the person themselves.

The two Susanna Spooners born Colby Norfolk on the 1861 census aged 25 and 18 become one Susanna Spooner on the 1851 census aged 16 (birth circa 1835/4) whose father was Joseph, a farmer's bailiff.

Susanna Tennant's death in 1870 would give her a birth of circa 1837/6.

Hi Valda

It may be me being a little thick but I'm not sure who you are referring to when you say " Susanna Tennant's death in 1870...." this can not be Edith's mother if Edith was born in 1872.

A slip of my typing it should read

Susanna Tennant's death in 1877 would give her a birth of circa 1837/6.

Deaths Dec 1877
Tennant  Susannah  40  Kensington  1a 35

Same possible birthdate and slightly later than the Susanna Spooner's birthdate from the earlier censuses.
