Alfred Earle WINSOR where did he go?
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 02:01 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Can you help? I hope so.

Alfred Earle WINSOR was married to Edith Tennent in 1902 by 1913 there were 3 children, one being my grandfather.

Sometime during the early twenties Alfred left his wife and children ( a disagreement about life style choices).  It was thought that he went to Devon , there were relatives in the area but there is NO prove.

If you know where he went to or where he died and is buried I would appreciate you help.

Hi Taffy64,

This is a hard one as it is post 1911 census etc..
A laborious way might be the only way... searching thru the death indexes post 1902 when you know he was live as he left his wife then.
His name is not such a common one so that would help.
You don't say how old he was when he married... but assuming he was  20+ at marriage, by 1920s he would have been 40. So you'd need to search probably the next 20 yrs- ubless you're dead unlucky and he lived until 90 Roll Eyes

Maybe freebmd could be worth a look in case he died young- the transcriptions are in 1920s now.
Is there any suggestion he may have married again- or have emigrated?

Casting around for ideas...

Hello Charlotte

You are quite right this IS a hard one, which is why my appeal to the wider world is one of desperation.
In reply to your questions;

Alfred was 30 when he married (born March 1872, Newton Abbot, Devon)
And a carpenter.

What makes it difficult is that he appeared not use the "Earle" all the time and as a result lots of Alfred Winsors appear in different records all over the country but which one is he?

Edith did tell her daughter-in-law that he went off to stay with relatives but was not forthcoming as to where, however it is not thought that he remarried/emigrated.

His fathers name was Charles.  in 1881 Alfred lived in Acton Middlesex and 1902 Paddington, so when we left he was about 50 give or take

Hi John, when I read your post I just said "crumbs"... if you can't reply on that middle name in use then it makes it very hard..

If he was 50 when he left it's probablya 20-30 year span you'll need to cover in death indexes- hope you have good eyes and lots of pateince Roll Eyes

Ican't see any shortcuts in this baring you stumbling over another RCer who knows about him.

Incidentally, have you checked RC Surnames? top of this page 4th button from left. ... that would be a miracle Grin Grin

Hi Charlotte

No miracle.

Alfred had siblings who were born in the area, but NO talk/memories etc was ever made of them so I can't trace them to see if he went to them.

My father never knew his grand father because Alfred had "gone" by the time of his birth in 1940 and both my dad and his dad have always had a "burning need to know" what happened to him.

It has been suggested that he might even have been one of the many nameless victims of the Blitz, who knows?

Thanks for your time though

John, I had someone who disappeared in 1939 and supposedly was on a shop travelling to England from Canada that was torpeoded. The fact is that he had nicked off to Toronto with his lady friend. They hid out there until moving to BC where he died in1951.
He'd left his wife and family who never knew what happened to him.  The net + masses of effort sleuthing found this out quite recently.
So don't discount some scenario such as this.
