Hi All,
This is just a hopefull posting that someone on the Australian board with their vast resources and expertise can find a family of Holdsworths arriving in Australia 1851-1861. They lived in Melbourne according to other family descendants info. They then went on to New Zealand and first info I have on them there is abt 1861.
David, 1808/1811, Selby, Yks
Mary, 1808, Barton upon Humber, Lincolnshire
David, 1834 Barton,Lincs
John Torr, 1838, Glanford Brigg, Lincs
William,1840, Barton,Lincs
Ann Elizabeth, 1839 or 1847 Glanford, Lincs
Eliza, 1844, Barton, Lincs
Martin Luther, 1849, Bradford, Lancashire
So parents in 40's in 1850/60's and children teens and twenties 
David was a draper and is the subject of my Scavenger Hunt

I have amended post.
They last appear in Lancashire in 1851 Census but may have not left there til late 1850's.
This is just a hopeful posting as they would have paid their own fares.
It is possible David supplied uniforms in NZ for the Army as his sons carted ammo. there in the 1865 period.

I have all the info on them from NZ, including BMD's. John Torr Holdsworth died in Queensland in 1894 after leaving NZ and I even have his death cert.
Its just any of their arrivals that I am stuck with.
There is just 1 strange entry on the Mariners site;
Lord Warrinton, 9 February 1857, London to Sydney
Mr Holdsworth and 4 misses Holdsworth
Would looking it up at the State Library give more info?

There are a number of Holdsworth in Victoria during that period of time as well.
Having looked at the Victoria Shiiping that is available on line nothing is leaping out. I wondered if they actually ventured to another state first before they came to Victoria if indeed they did.

I am not aware as to what information is on an NZ death certificate (I should look this up on the NZ Board).
Have you obtained David' death certificate in NZ and did it say how long in NZ?
Is it just family heresay that the family came to Australia first to live?
The 1856 electoral roll for Victoria shows a few Holdsworth but not the one's you are chasing. Mind you they could be related at that is why they went to Victoria or chasing Gold as so many. many did in the mind 1850's.
Also quite a lot of Holdsworth's in the oneline NSW BDM's.

Hi Jen,
Yes to a certain extent it is hearsay and a entry in a book in NZ has them in Australia before NZ. Unfortunately that was written 1967 so could be incorrect.
DAVIDS death cert reveals little, as it was in 1868 and the copy I have has him dying in Hospital and very little info just cause and date etc.
2nd Wife MARY ELIZA's 1894 DC says 35 yrs in NZ which makes it abt 1859/60 .
2 of the childrens;
ELIZA Fry/Collicoat 75yrs in NZ, died 1924 aged 82, so abt 1849
Martin Luther Holdsworth died aged 77yrs in 1923, 53yrs in NZ so abt 1870 . His age is out a little too.
I think Mary Elizas is probably the closest we would get as it would be fresher in informants minds in 1894 than 30yrs later.
Also the first official info I have is David reg the birth of his illeg. grandchild in 1861.He seems to have reg. most of his grandchilds births!
Please do not spend any more of your valuable time on this as you can see why it has been my brickwall for ages.

[I'm "stalking" your HOLDSWORTHs ! Not sure which thread to add info to ? ] 
PapersPast has a "David HOLDSWORTH" as a member of a jury (for 2 trials) ... Auckland - 1856.
"Daily Southern Cross" - 7 March 1856 - "Criminal Session" :
ALSO ... can find only one death of a "David HOLDSWORTH" in NZ (your man in 1868).
So, is the chap in 1856, one and the same ?
Suppose this could be another "David" who upped sticks and left NZ ?
[Just throwing another spanner in the works. ]

Yes mine died 1868. Death cert from then obviuosly offers little info.

I know he reg. a birth 1861 and miners licences 1868. He apparently had a Drapers business in Queen St Auckland as well.
Just found William Holdsworth, born 1840, bootmakers shop on here;

Off to look for William death etc as I have little on him
EDIT; May have made a mistake here 
One dies 1878 aged 38 and another 1922, aged 81.
Most Trees have him dying 1878. May have to check this one out more.
See where I made my mistake, 1881 Electrol Roll at library site has a William Holdsworth, bootmaker, Victoria St.
