This is a really helpful correction. Thank you Ambly.
So it looks as if the the first FWR is not the husband of Mary Ann MILLS, which leaves the question, what happened to him?
Here he is with the rest of the family in Shepton Mallet in 1851: RICHMOND Frederick 42 Farmer 104 Acres Shepton Mallet, Som. Elizabeth 48 Wife Babcary Edwin 13 Shepton Mallet, Som. Albert 11 Shepton Mallet, Som. Julia 8 Shepton Mallet, Som. Frederick 4 Shepton Mallet, Som. Herbert 6m Shepton Mallet, Som. JACOBS Elizabeth Servant 24 Farm Servant Shepton Mallet, Som. HEARN ? Marianna Servant 16 Farm Servant Ditcheat, Som. STEPHENS Thomas Servant 18 Farm Servant Pilton, Som.
I can't immediately see him in 1881, and I don't have access to other census years. Can anyone suggest what became of him? Maybe he is the Frederick William RICHMOND who died in Shepton Mallet in the March Quarter of 1874 aged 27? This seems likely, especially given the middle name, the age and the place of death.
Kind regards
Phil Candy

Eliza Hill RICHMOND is buried, and has a headstone at Sandon cemetery, died aged 95 on 2 May 1935, and buried 4 May.
Margaret Lydia RICHMOND died 29 Jul 1903 aged 43 and is buried at Rongotea cemetery
Frances Amelia DAVIS died 2 Aug 1920 aged 83, on same headstone as Eliza RICHMOND, her mother??
Go to http://www.mdc.govt.nz and click on Cemetery Records. There are photos there of the headstones.
Sandon cemetery is where there are Strode Penny burials as well, quite a few. There is a Penny Road in the area which is named for them from memory as well.
The cemetery is called Sandon, which is the original name of the district. The town is now called Sanson.
Not far from where I live.

Generally from the IGI (Submitted):
Walter RICHMOND and Margaret Lydia EDWARDS who were married in 1882, and Margaret who apparently died in 1935 (but seems that's wrong as Ian has found the 1903 record):
Children: Frederick William b 1883 Sanson Edith Ellen b 1885 Sanson (Manawatu), married THOMPSON 1905, died 1966 Auckland Sarah Eliza b 1886 Sanson, died 1969 Te Awamutu (Waikato) Phoebe Durston, b 1887 Sanson, m HOLMES 1907 Cambridge (Waikato), died 1964 Cambridge (Waikato) Ethel Alice b 1889 Sanson, married SIMPSON 1910 Katie b 1890 Rongotea, died 1974 Onehunga, Auckland & buried in Purewa Cemetery. George Henry b 1891 Rongotea Herbert Henry b 1893 Rongotea Georgina Henrietta 1895 Rongotea Frances Amelia b 1899 Rongotea, died 1986 Charles Edwin b 1900 Rongotea, died 1909 Margaret Lydia b 1902 Taikorea died 1990
Other information has it that Walter died August 1930. And that Margaret Lydia EDWARDS was: born 1861 the daughter of Charles EDWARDS died NZ 1918 and Sarah Jane RAY b 1842 died 1928 who had married 1859 in Taratahi Plain, Wellington.
If you check Papers Past and search for Walter - you'll find he got him self into a bit of bother in 1901 over some sheep - apparently he nicked them, killed or sold them & then gave the proceeds back to the person he nicked them off (methinks a lot more than meets the eye in that one!) . Also mention him selling up his farm in 1907 and getting into trouble for not sending his kids to school too.
Sigh, I used to live in Ashhurst, Ian - up to earlier this year - passed thru and stopped off in Sanson many times to look in the antique shops! Were I still there I'd look at headstones

(Old) Leamington Cemetery, Cambridge (Waikato) has: Walter RICHMOND 1930
http://cambridgemuseum.org.nz/Cemetery/leamington.htm
I'm thinking, Walter went there to be near his daughter Phoebe who married and died in Cambridge?

Thanks so much. This a real bonus; especially getting back a further generation on the Davis side. I really appreciate your help.

Looks like Frances Amelia was Eliza Hill's sister, not mother
1838 Jan 31, Frances Amelia, d/o John & Mary DAVIS, Fry Lane, yeoman, born 1838 Jan 4 1840 May 20, Eliza Hill, d/o John & Mary DAVIS, Charlton, yeoman, born 1840 Apr 25
Barnard Strode PENNY married Ann DAVIS at Shepton Mallet on Dec 5 1833. William PENNY aged 5 in 1841 with the DAVIS family was BS and Ann's son, baptised May 5 1835. Another son Barnard Strode PENNY, born 9 Nov 1839 is the one who came to NZ, along with his mother. They are both buried in the Sandon Cemetery. William is also buried at Sandon.
Ann DAVIS would appear to be the daughter of William and Johanna DAVIS, born 6 Mar 1809 Shepton Mallet.
There could be some connection through the DAVIS side as well.

Shepton Mallet baptism
1808 May 21, Frederick, s/o William & Betty RICHMOND, born 1808 May 18 - fits with being 42 in 1851, married Elizabeth, parents of Edwin.
Frederick's older brother William born 1797 is the one who married Matilda Strode PENNY by the look of it.

Hi Ian
Thanks so much for this. Can you tell me which parish these baptisms occurred in? It doesn't look like Shepton Mallet (bot on freereg anyway!)
Your intuition about the DAVIS connection is spot on, and has solved a mystery.
Clearly William and Joanna DAVIS had at least three children, although I can only find baptisms for two.
John DAVIS, born about 1805, married Mary PARFITT (no date yet) and had at least three children: Frances (1838) Eliza Hill (1840) William (1844)
Elizabeth DAVIS, baptised in 1807, married Thomas Candy and had seven children, one of whom (Artemis) emigrated to NZ and married his cousin Eleanor Strode PENNY
Ann DAVIS baptised in 1809, married Barnard Strode PENNY and had four children one of whom (Eleanor) emigrated to NZ and married her cousin Artemis CANDY.
Meanwhile, back at John, his daughter Eliza Hill DAVIS married Edwin RICHMOND and had five children, of whom two (Walter and Frederick William) emigrated to NZ. Frederick William married Amy Agnes CANDY, daughter of Artemis and Eleanor CANDY. There are further connections back in England between the PENNYs and the RICHMONDs, so once again there were cousin marriages in New Zealand.
This whole adventure has been very interesting; many thanks for all your help.
Best wishes
Phil

Thanks so much for these lookups Ambly. They have added hugely to the picture.
I don't suppose you can see the marriage between William DAVIS and Joanna? I can't spot it anywhere.
Kind regards and thanks
