Lambie Family
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 09:44 UTC (UK) »

In the WW1 Roll of Honour of Scotland's dead I am working I have raeched Corporal Daniel Lambie, born and living in Saltcoats, died 24/4/1917, age 33. It appears that his wife and two children drowned in 1915 when the Lusitania was torpedoed. I think I have them from a passenger list - Mrs Mary Lambie, Miss Elizabeth Lambie, and Miss Mary Roslyn Lambie - although I am not sure about Mary Roslyn. Not sure of Mrs Lambie's age but I think Elizabeth was born in 1903. As yet I can't find Mary Roslyn which makes me wonder if she is a daughter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Alastair:

www.threetowners.com/Saltcoats/lusitania_victims.htm

Four Saltcoats Victims
Mrs Mary Lambie (nee Docherty), whose parents reside in Arthur St, Saltcoats was the wife of Daniel Lambie, who, prior to emigration to Ronald, Washington. She was a young woman, and had been abroad for about 5 yrs. Lately she had been in indifferent health and decided to return home. Along with her and her two daughters, aged 9 & 6 yrs, she embarked on the Lusitania for Liverpool. None of them ever reached port. The husband is still in Ronald, Washington, he is a slater to trade, and served his apprenticeship with Judge Christie, Saltcoats. By some means or another Mr Docherty, a brother of the deceased had information that Mrs Lambie was confined in an hospital in Southhampton, and he proceeded there via London on Sunday. He learned on arrival that such was not the case and no further news has been received.

There is a marriage showing on SP for a Daniel Lambie and Mary Docherty in Stevenston, Ayrshire in 1905. I assume you have Danieil with his family in the 1901 Census in Saltcoats.

Alastair

I think the reference to 'Roslyn' is probably a place name in Washington:

Mrs. Daniel Lambie, died (Mary Docherty) Roslyn, Washington, Verenigde Staten
Miss Elizabeth Lambie, died (08) (child) Roslyn, Washington, Verenigde Staten
Miss Mary Lambie, died (02) (child) Roslyn, Washington, Verenigde Staten

Thanks for all that. It does, however, leave one mystery (unless I am missing something). CWGC is quite clear that Daniel lost his wife and two children in 1915 and then died himself in 1917, but the newspaper report says he stayed behind in America. I can only conjecture that after his family's death he was motivated to come back and enlist out of anger towards the Germans.

Unfortunately his enlistment record does not come up in the national Archives so may have been burned in the fire that destroyed a lot of them.

What do you think about my guesswork?

That kind of fits my theory that Daniel returned as soon as he found out about his family's death - and enlisted.

Thanks for your help and now back to my 7,000 Argylls
