Whilst searching parish records for births/baptisms of my ancestors, I came across the following written in the margin of the record of the baptism of Richard Hudson who was born and baptised 27 January 1844, child of Edward and Hannah.
"This child by mistake of the surgeon was baptised Richard instead of Elizabeth"
Poor child

Sounds as though the surgeon needed a new pair of specs!

Does that mean Richard had to go through life as Elizabeth, or vice versa?
Poor lad, I mean girl, I mean..............

I did wonder if the child was one of those where the sex is difficult to determine at birth because of a defect and as the baby was baptised on the day of birth, perhaps he/she died. In fact, I've just looked on the 1851 census and found Edward and Hannah Hudson with 4 children, Ann aged 11, Isabell aged 10, Coward( transcription is exactly as census) aged 5 and James aged 3 months. On FreeBMD there is a birth and death of a child Richard Hudson in the March quarter of 1844 and also a death in the June quarter of 1845 of an Elizabeth Hudson. Maybe the parents registered the birth and death in the name of Richard and then when they were told they'd had a daughter after all, they re-registered the death as Elizabeth.

Out of curiosity, I'm going to get what I think is "Richard's" death certificate.

Modified - Just looked on FreeBMD and in Mar 1844 there is a death of a Richard Hudson, if you click on Page No. to get a list of the other people listed there is a "Female" Hudson with the same reference numbers, so that's interesting.

Remembering Some Mother Do 'Ave 'Em
Frank: "It's a boy - I've got a boy!" Doctor: "It's a girl, Mr Spencer." Frank: "Well, what's that then?" Doctor: "That is the umbilical cord." Frank: "Ooh I say!"

There are conditions where the sex of a new born baby is hard to determine. They are caused by an excess of hormones in the mother. Baby boys can be born lactating and baby girls have swollen genitals which mimic those you would expect of a boy. Many mistakes were made and some girls were mutilated as it was hoped they would then be normal when in fact left alone things would have sorted themselves out anyway as the hormone level dropped to normal because it is not abnormal as such just rather rare . I`m sure some RootsChatter with more knowlege than I have cuold give an accurate explanation. I `m thinking the term -surgeon- was an old fashioned term for a doctor.Viktoria.

Out of curiosity, I'm going to get what I think is "Richard's" death certificate. Gosh GRO is working fast, I ordered the certificate on Monday afternoon and it arrived this morning (Friday).
Anyway, it states name Richard Hudson, sex Female, died aged 19 days, cause of death Spina Bifida. Looks like the doctor knew the baby wouldn't live, didn't look to see whether it was a boy or girl, or maybe the baby had other problems beside spina bifida which made it look like a boy and the baby was baptised as Richard on the day of her birth.

Given the level of knowledge in those days it would have been a very painful ,difficult life, no shunts to drain fluid and that means water (spinal fluid ) collecting in the skull. Whatever the sex of the baby it was loved and we hope is in a better place .Such a shame, poor little lamb. Viktoria.
