Manchester Newspapers - Look up please?
« on: Monday 06 July 09 01:16 UTC (UK) »

Would anyone be able to do a Newspaper look up for me please?

I am looking for information on my gt-grandmothers Death / Obituary / Inquest or Burial.

Her name was Martha Bebbington (mn Bates)
Died: 11th March 1922
Manchester Royal Infirmary.
Aged: 36 Years.
Home address was Chorlton On Medlock
Next of kin was her Husband John Bebbington.

There was an Inquest into her death dated 14th March 1922
Cause of death was Heart Failure due to administration of Ether during an operation
Verdict was Misadventure.

I am hoping that there may be a mention of her father (who died the same quarter) and I am hoping that there will be a mention of when & where her funeral was as so far I havent been able to find it.
Anything else would be a bonus.

Thank You

Gaille,
As you have dates for death and inquest why not ask the Local Studies Library closest to the location of the events if they would do a lookup and maybe even scan the newspaper item on the inquest.  Assuming the papers reported it which i think is pretty likely.

Hi Charlotte,

I would normally but right now I am housebound recovering from a big operation and will be for at least another few weeks & I cant get out to either Manchester or Oldham (My local one) to do it, and I know they wont do them over the phone as I have asked before for something else.
I was kind of hoping someone may be going to Manchester or have access to them that could see if there is anything.

Gaille,
Sorry that you are having such a tough run- and hope you'll recuperate and feel stronger soon.
I wasn't thinking you'd go to the library but that you'd email them.
If you don't get a reply from a RCer who is going to the Libaray then maybe if you did email the library, explain your have just had major surgery and are unable to get to the Library in the foreseeable future and ask  if they could help you.   Nothing to loose...

Hope you're better before too long Cheesy

Hi,

 Smiley

I needed some items (a news item from 1915 and and an obituary from 1922) from the Burnley Express recently and I emailed the Burnley Library and explained I couldn't visit in person as I live in Malta.  They were so very helpful, photocopied what I needed and popped them in the post.  They just charged me a couple of pounds to cover photocopying and postage.

From the information you have, the newspaper report/obituary should be very easy for them to find and if Manchester Library are as helpul as Burnley, you should have no problems.

Best of luck and get well soon.

Do it Gaille Grin

As Luzzu says, the Librarians are very helpful... and it would be nice to have it arrive whilst you are recuperating- give you a boost.   Cheesy

Please dont think I am getting at anyone for suggesting asking the library, but as I said in my 2nd post, I HAVE called the library & asked & they WONT do a look up for me.
I even called them again today to double check & the lady I spoke to said they are not able to do look ups for people even if they have all the details.

Gaille, that's very disappointing and sorry you've had that  when you're trying to get better... so a lookup by a local who goes to the library is the way to go?

Do you think it might maximize your chances of getting a lookup by reposting your request with a subject something like "Manchester Library lookup of 1922 newspaper please."?  Huh
