Mary Ann BICKNELL, born 1814 Wigan
« on: Monday 06 July 09 14:21 UTC (UK) »

Could SKS see if they can find a baptism (or anything) that would lead me to this lady's parents? This is a strange Family. She married an Irishman, had children by him, then they dumped them in a Scottish boarding school and disappeared for a few years, then re-appeared. Well, that's how it looks. I'm sure there's more to the story. Anyway, I'd like to trace her background.

Many thanks.

There are not many Wigan baptisms on line.  Do you have an idea of which area in Wigan?  R.

She married a William Mears, I don't have a date. I got her maiden name from their daughter's marriage record.

As to the area, all I have is the censuses giving me her date and birthplace.

It is offered as follows:

1851 Census (Wigan) Born Wigan, 1814
1861 Can't find either of them
1871 Census (Ince in Makersfield, and Lower Ince, Wigan) Born Wigan 1823 (not 1828 as transcribed on Ancestry)

The age discrepancy is odd, the original images of 1851 and 1871 show the ages quite clearly, but I'm assuming the 1851 entry is more correct as her husband was born 1813.

Hi,

According to the IGI William Mears married Mary Ann Bicknell on the 26th August, 1849 at St. Mary le Strand, Westminster London.

Oh thanks Mo. This couple travelled around so much, I've never seen anything like it.

Fascinating thing about William is that in 1851 he's a coal miner, but on his daughter's marriage record (1877) he's a piano teacher (but deceased). I cannot decipher the occupation on the 1871 census, but the word teacher is there. How did a coal miner afford to put his kids in a Scottish boarding school by 1861? And where did he and Mary Ann go? Was he such a good piano teacher he was able to rise up the social ladder?

I live in hope that someone who knows this may read this entry some day, even after it's been archived.

Hi,

William Mears occupation on the 1871 census was a Furnace Tenter and written above it is Iron.  That is if it is the one living in Ince in Makerfield.

Are you certain that you have the right family?

Oh boy, LOL. I understand you asking that question, but here's  the thing......It has to be the right family. How many William Mears born in Ireland in 1813 married Mary Anns born in Wigan can there be?

I think Furnace Tester maybe? But whatever it is..................makes no sense.

Honestly, these people just make my head hurt.

Hi, I'm no expert but would offer the following:

Did you get the Ireland birth from the census?  It's just that there was a William Mears born in Wigan in 1815.

Also, why not send for the above marriage cert (reference is on freebmd) then you may find out more about Mary Ann's parentage?

Do you have the names of the children?

Happy to help where I can as I live in the Wigan area.

Yes, that's the answer, I shall have to get that certificate because now I don't think it is Wigan. Argh.

Hi,

If I'm looking at the right children in Scotland 1861, there is William MEARS age: 11 and Louisa A MEARS age: 5, (both born England) boarders at Glasgow College, Lanarkshire. Also boarding there are,

Alexander WARDROP    35  Pianist        Glasgow Lanark
Mary Ann WARDROP    29  Vocalist       England
Alexander WARDROP   16  Merchants Clerk  Glasgow Lanark

I mention this because my theory is...

Mo has found a marriage of William MEARS and Mary Ann BICKNELL in 1849 in the Strand London. I found this birth in the Strand,

William James MEARS    Mar Q 1850    Strand    1  394

This could be William Snr and Mary in 1851, but I can't find William Jnr,

1851  HO107/1878  f.451  p.13  Plymouth Charles The Martyr, Devon
Pack Horse Inn, 13 Week Street

Mary A MEARS     Visitor    Mar    19    Professor of Music    Middlesex St James
William MEARS      Visitor    Mar    22         "     "                           "    "

There are also these births,

Emma Jane MEARS    Mar Q 1852    Plymouth    5b  244

Louisa Hannah MEARS    Dec Q 1855    Strand    1b  363

and these christenings,

Emma Jane MEARS
Birth:  21 DEC 1852
Christening:  20 FEB 1853   St James, Westminster, London
Father: William MEARS
Mother: Mary Ann

Louisa Hannah MEARS
Birth Date: 22 Sep 1855
Christening Date: 14 Oct 1855
Christening Place: Westminster, London, England
Father: William MEARS
Mother: Mary Ann

In 1861 Emma MEARS is with her grandmother,

1861  RG09/175  f.19  p.32  St Anne, Strand, Middlesex
16 Little Dean Street

Sarah BICKNELL      Head     W    56    Music Printer       St James Middlesex
Elizabeth    "           Daur     U    18    Milliner                St Anne Middlesex
Sarah        "           Daur     U    14    No Occupation      St Anne Middlesex
Emma MEARS   Granddaur            9                              Plymouth Devon
Annie CAPEL    Granddaur           5m                           St Anne Middlesex
Edward HARMSTON  Son In Law  M 34    Music Printer   St George Southwark
Emma      "             Wife     M    37                            St James Middlesex
Alice           "         Daur            6                            St Anne Middlesex
Henry        "           Son             4                            St Anne Middlesex
Edward     "            Son              2                           St Anne Middlesex

In 1871 the children seem to be  reunited in Scotland, I can't see the image so not sure about 'Jeff',

39 Caledonia Rd, Glasgow Govan Lanarkshire

Alexander WARDROP    Head    44    Pianist                 Glasgow, Lanark
Mary Ann         "         Wife    39    Vocalist               England
Jeff MEARS           Stepson    21    Engineer Plainer     England
Emma MEARS        Stepdaur   19    Vocaless              England
Louisa MEARS       Stepdaur   15                              England
John WARDROP         Father   76                              Glasgow, Lanark
Richd LANGDELL     Nephew     8    Scholar                 England

So I think William MEARS Snr died early and Mary remarried Alexander WARDROP both between 1855 and 1861, just when and where Undecided

Daisy

Daisy, you've found half the puzzle. I re-checked Louisa's marriage and Mary Ann did indeed marry Alexander Wardrop, so all that fits in.

I did a very careless thing, and I should know better, and assumed that the only William Mears, married to a Mary Ann, must be The Couple. Hence Wigan. But clearly it wasn't. I couldn't find any other couple in the entire UK to fit, and that Devon one did not show up on all my wildcard searches a number of ways, so well done indeed for finding it.

The Jeff part baffles me. It has to be a bad transcription of William, but quite how, I don't know.

Many thanks for your fine detective work. I was literally up all night on this and got nowhere. I bow to you!!!!
