Florence Gertrude Swann was born on 30th January 1858 in Lowestoft, Suffolk, daughter of Mary Ann Swann, of Towring St. No father's name is on the birth certificate.
On her marriage certificate she named her father as Joseph Murrell, fish merchant, Lowestoft.
In 1861 census there are 3 contenders- Joseph Murrell born 1810, Southend on Sea, living at Denmark Street; Joseph Murrell born 1833, Southend on Sea, fish merchant, in Towring Street, and Joseph Murrell born 1838, Chelmsford, a fish buyer, living in Chapel lane, incidentally the same street as that of Florence & her grand parents.
Maybe the baptism record would have the father's name on it-anyone have access to it?
All the above Joseph's were married at the time. Joseph born 1833, divorced his wife in 1867, but in Grimsby.
Completed thanks
Tom

The fish merchant, Towering Street, esp as it seems he had unhappy marriage.

Yes okay for guess work, I know he seems the favourite, but I wonder if there was a mention on her baptismal record.
If not, I wonder if there was a bastard hearing so that the child's mother could obtain some income for her child-where could I find out that?

Yokel,
Tonning Street, okay, yes I see it now, with Denmark Street running parallel, but closer the docks.

Tom, The Joseph age 50 in Denmark Street, Fish Merchant and Joseph age28 in Tonning Street, Fish Dealer do you think they could be Father and Son
(Doesn't help to find Florence's father though)
Where did Mary Ann get to in 1861, I assume she married either John Briton or James Brown?

Yokel,
They are uncle and nephew, Joseph 28's father was John Murrell, wife Hannah Brookes, John's brother was Joseph. Joseph was on the Lowestoft Council I think, died in 1864. I am not sure what happened to the Swann side of it but their family were well known in Lowestoft too!

yokel
Mary Ann maried John Britteon to whom she had 8 children.
Florence Gertude Swan married Peter Walker in 1881. They are my GGparents. One of the witnesses was Florence's half sister Elizabeth Rose Britteon.
