Felgate - Kings Lynn
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 13:30 UTC (UK) »

The purpose of my post is to try to find someone who can shed light on the death of my Great Grandmother:
MARY FELGATE.  Born October 1825.
Her parents were William Felgate 1785 - 1851, and Mary Fox 1786 - 1871 of Kings Lynn.
William and his wife and their son-in-law George Bishop were licensees of the Fisherman's Arms in Pilot Street over the period 1836 - 71.
Mary's siblings were:
Nancy Felgate 1809 (married David Melton 1835)
Mary Felgate 1811 - 1820
Susanna Felgate 1814 - 1820
Elizabeth Felgate 1819 (married Henry Smith in 1839)
Susan Felgate 1822 (married Thomas Cannell Cross 1855)
Rebecca Felgate 1829 (married George Bishop 1856)

Mary Felgate married Richard Parry of London at St Nicholas Kings Lynn 15 Feb 1851.
They had two children in London where he was a cabinet maker:
Richard Parry 10 August 1854 (emigrated to Australia 1870s)
Walter Samuel Parry 2 December 1855 (married and lived in Norfolk)

Richard Parry remarried in London 11 July 1858 to Elizabeth Sarah Main - also of Kings Lynn - and also daughter of a Publican - Thomas & Elizabeth Main - King George Inn, Conduit Street.  (Says something about him !).
Sarah died 9th December 1888 London.  One son: James Main Parry 1860. (married and lived in London).

Trying to pin down a death for Mary Parry nee Felgate in London or elsewhere between December 1855 and 1858 has proved elusive.  Marriage Certificate for the second marriage has him as WIDOWER.
Richard Parry died between 1881 Census and Dec 1888 - and cant find his death detail either yet.
Hoping that someone associated with the Felgate (or Main ?) family might know more - or offer corrections to the above assumptions.

Thank you Mum44

I was going to allow this post to percolate a little before embarking on fishing expeditions at GRO Certificate Ordering Service for Seven Pounds a cast.

We were used to using Freebmd so often - and know that the first quarter deaths for 1856 are still not indexed there, so we were unsure if there were other possibilities.

But when I look up your possibility of Holborn - it seems to have some geographical link with Pancras which is what I am used to seeing for this family.  With your mention of it - and looking at that location more - it makes it worthy of a "first try" at GRO.

For anyone finding this thread - an update.

The GRO Death Certificate Q2. 1856  Holborn  Vol. 1b. Pg. 296 is not the Mary Parry nee Felgate I am looking for.

That Mary Parry was 82 years of age - and died in the workhouse.

So the search continues.

But have found her husband's death detail - Richard Parry (1821 - Wrexham) :
September 1881
District - Yarmouth
Vol - 4b
Page - 12

He and his 2nd wife and their son were visiting her brother in Great Yarmouth where he died of a heart attack.  So that's one mystery solved.

Great Yarmouth - Apollo Walk - a fitting place.
He spent his working life in London making billiard tables and piano cases - but died by the sea in Norfolk, which he had visited so many times and obviously enjoyed.
Along with the Norfolk / Kings Lynn ladies as both his wives were from there.  (And both publican's daughters !!)

Hi

There is an interesting website giving the names of Old Norfolk pubs and the Landlords which confirms that your ancestors were licensees

Thank you David

That website is where I got the information in the first place - a great resource.

The family has three connections with Norfolk pubs:

Felgate / Bishop : Fisherman's Arms in Pilot Street, Kings Lynn

Main : King George Inn, Conduit Street, Kings Lynn

Main : Unicorn, 28 Tower Street, Kings Lynn
