USA marriage UK born
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 14:02 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I am chasing a marriage record of two people born in UK and married in Ohio USA. three children born in Ohio and then returned to Workington.
Sara Jane Joplin(g) bn  Durham) -m William Longstaff (bn Bedale)in Ohio abt 1867-70.
Emma Hope Longstaff born Ohio 1870
This family appears on 1881 Workington cenus, Brayton Street.
How do i obtain marriage cert and birth certs. I have been unable to locate any information
Nothing on BDM sites both UK and USA, and no luck with acessing UK archives site.
I would be very grateful to some advice of how to locate info.

thank you

Are you wanting the marriage cert / birth certs of children that occured in USA?
If so best to transfer this to USA board to get specialist info.

From the censuses it looks as if they were in Illinois at time of John's birth, so that may help.

If it is their own births, rather than the childrens, then again the censuses give clues as to where they were born

1881

William 46 Steel Rail straightener bn Yorkshire Asker??
Sarah J 36 bn Durham West Renton

Emma H 11
Aron J 5  all children bn "America"

Hi

Looking at the birth places, many of these placews were pronounced in dialect/ strong accent and Cumbrians tend to miss chunks off,

eg "Sanuth" for "Sandwith"
    "Terpennur" for Torpenhow etc.
"'tMoor" for "The Moor", meaning Cleator Moor", etc.

I wonder if Beale could be "Bedale"  and "Asker" Aisgarth or some other variation?

Best wishes

Sorry, just seen the Bedale at the top.

Hi again.

If William's age is accurate on the census, then he was born just beforwe the start of civil registration in this country, so we are down to church records.

Looking on familysearch.org, under "Search Records", unfortunately there are two entries very close together for a William baptised at Bedale.

C;licking on the name:

On 8 March 1835, William Langstaffe, son of James and Mary was baptised.

On 16 April, 1836 William Longstaff, son of George and Mary was baptised.  Also a couple very close by.

You could ask for someone to look at the original which you should anyway, for extra clues such as abode details or occuopation.

Best wishes

Hi

I couldn't see Sarah Jane on familysearch, but on Free bmd -

(She seems to have been born after 1837 and this indexes civil registration, though it isn't complete, it's pretty good at this stage.  You can also look at the original image of the index to check.)

From the entry, you can send to ONS in Southport, online or post, or a local registrar's (Not with this code).for a birth certificate.

http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Unfortunately, the two census entry's give different birth dates so it's a big interval.  Only one Sarah Jane, but also one at Bedale!  She could have been born at say a grandparent's.

I think in your position I woul;d look for the marriage in the USA/ try the USA board, and if you can get the certificate over there, - Possibly online, you usually get the fathers names and occupations.  Also, possibly, another idea of Sarah Jane's age.

Have alook on the link and see what you think.

Best wishes

Hi Geoff E,

thanks for the info and updates.

Is it best to obtain MRG cert through GRO or would there be access to a Durham registration.

Also i am wondering if a person born overseas to Brittish parents is required to register birth on entry to the UK??
Any ideas??

Thanks you for your suggestions. I am hoping that i can find some kind of record of birth for emma and siblings in US sites, however it is very costly even to look at indexes so I will try the boards first and take it from there.

thanks again for help.
