born in America but British Citizen
« on: Wednesday 08 July 09 18:53 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know how to find information about a British Subject born in America.  In the 1901 census it says my great grandfather Sidney Smith was born in America but was a British subject.  Are there ways of tracing this?

Do you know his parents' names?  His date of birth?  Was he on any previous or subsequent UK census records?

I don't know what the bureaucratic procedure was a century ago, but these days you register your child with the British Consul in the country you are living

Our children were born in Switzerland, so we registered their births in Geneva British Consulate. They issue a normal British Birth Cert.

The British Government have this page with procedures

You should be able to get a Birth Cert for your g-grandfather via that route

Wandsworth Battersea.  They are gypsies and live at Donovans Yard.  There are 2 older siblings Fanny b 1885 and Rainer b 1891, both born in England.   Thomas (father) also used the surname Riddle under which I found him in 1881, 1861 census.  In the 1901 census Thomas is a Hawker but he has also been a Horse Keeper, Groom and his death certificate said he was formerly a professional athlete.

I took a quick look at the Consular Births index at Find My Past but didn't see any entries for a birth of Sidney Smith.

Have you found him on the 1911 England census? Perhaps it will provide a more exact location. With his birth listed as America, it is possible he could have been born in the US or Canada.
