S - L - O - W running Vista ... help !

I've brought home (to see if I can speed up) the laptop of an 80 year old who I help with emails ... she barely uses it ... emails, and puts her photos on it ... one drive is about third full, the other totally empty !   However, its running so slowly ... she seems to have dozens of applications running and its hardly ticking over ... any ideas please ?


(I've avoided Vista myself like the plague as so many people seem to have problems with it ... )

Can't give you any help just wanted to say I've got Vista and have never had any problems with it.   I used to have XP which was very slow, but that seemed to be related to the laptop I had at the time and all the applications relating to that.  Now I have a Sony and everything works well and quickly.  So maybe the problem lies with the laptop rather than Vista.

Ummm, Hi, Lydart,

If your friend is only using the laptop for e-mails and photo storage can you not just uninstall the "dozens" of applications?

You could post a list of what's running and someone with more knowledge could tell you what is needed and what's not.

Just a suggestion.

Hi

You could empty all your photos delete unwanted emails and save rest.

Go into control panel

-click on internet options

Click Delete Temp internet files

Click Progams on top menu then click reset web setting  then apply then ok in that order.

Click advanced on top menu click Restore Default

Restart computer by Stop/Not restart-wait 60 seconds (Have a cupa)

Now restart.

after 5 minute wait!***to fully warm up

Start menu- accessories- system tools-

System restore follow the instuction on screen.

try clicking on Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Welcome Center to see the specs for the laptop. How much RAM does it have and what processor is being used?

I use Vista and love it. At the moment I have 30 odd processes running, CPU usage is 1% to 2% and memory usage is 1.76GB. I have 4GB capacity so my machine is running along quite quickly.

I've tried the above and also done a system restore to a month ago ... it seems to have improved ... and I've taken it back to her.   (Its a virtually new Acer laptop ... don't know the spec without going to check !)

She'll try it today and let me know ... so fingers crossed ...
