Kris and Jenn,
Fantastic job! I cant thank you enough. Apart from the tremendous information about the family in Australia you have identified his family for me in UK and I would never have dreamt of Canada being involved. I have looked at the nappers from Compton Dundon, somerset. Isaac's father william had a brother robert who had a son george b abt 1845. He is probably the George that arrived Adelaide on same ship as Isaac. You have given me far more that I could have hoped for.  colin

  Hello There,

My ancestor George Napper arrived in SA on the Norman Morrison and it is recorded in our family that he arrived with his cousin Isaac on the same ship.

Hi There,

It is great to make contact with others who are part of the Napper family.

My great great grandfather was George William Napper (nephew of William Napper b.06.07.1820) which I think means our common ancestor is Robert Napper of Compton Dundon Somerset b.27.06.1786 (m.Elizabeth?). The notes I have say he was the Clerk to the Parish Council.

The information I have was left to our family by my late grandmother and I am still finding my way through it .

She notes that George William arrived in South Australia in 1865 and his brothers Robert, Henry, Frank and William followed some years later in 1883.  In 1898 George, Frank and William went back to England to visit their parents and both Frank and William then remained there. This ties in with the census records you have found.

Please give my regards to your wife.

I agree, Robert is our common ancestor.
I have Robert b abt 1788, a shoemaker who married Elizabeth Periam 21 Nov 1811 in Butleigh, Somerset and their children as:-
William b 6 Jul 1820, Caroline b1816, Robert Periam b 19 Feb 1818, Joseph b1823 and Sophia b 1825.
I have Robert Periam marrying Sarah Whitcombe on 9 Jul 1844 and their children as: George b1845, Elizabeth b1847, Henry b1849, Robert b1853, Emily Ann b1860, Frank b1862,William Whitcombe b1863.
All events are Compton Dundon unless otherwise stated.
Robert was the Innkeeper at the Fox and Hounds from about 1861 until his death in 1899. He is noted on some census as Innkeeper and Farmer.
Henry is shown on 1871 census as a cattle dealer living with his parents.
Robert, Frank and William are also on 1871 census living with their parents.
Robert is shown on 1891 census as a farmer living with his parents and on the 1901 census as a farmer married to Mary A, b 1854 Ilchester Somerset, living at Compton Street, Compton Dundon. They possibly married in 1899.
Emily Ann was also at the Fox and Hounds in 1901 with William and Frank.

The fact that George’s 4 brothers went out to Australia answers why I have found it difficult to find them after 1871. Did they all stay in SA or did they move elsewhere?
The Napper family certainly didn’t hold back when it came to travelling considering this was all happening in the 19th century.

Jenn, another great piece of information - really appreciated.
Incidentally, Kris mentioned Maria Napper, a widow from Germany, in a previous post.
She was Marie Clara Hubner, born in Germany and naturalised British, widow of Isaac's younger brother Jacob b1849 d1890. They married in 1882 at St George Hanover Square, London.  No Children.
I mention this to show that all the assistance provided here has not only provided information in Australia and Canada but led me to Napper family members in Somerset, London and Wales (Isaac's brother Charles).

I recently read the messages regarding the Napper family but the thread does not seem to appear on the Australian list.  However, I just wanted to register my link in that my great great grandfather was Joseph Napper b 1823, the youngest son of Robert and Elizabeth.

With reference to the marriage of Ernest W Napper to Ellen Wright he was the son of  Eli Witcombe Napper rather than Isaac.

Thanks for filling in a lot of gaps and interesting to hear of all the travelling they did.

I believe that Eli's sister Caroline b1860 married John Willis in 1882. In 1891 they were living at 12 Gelly Crossing, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan. At this time there was an Isaac Napier aged 19 born in Somerset living as a boarder at 8 Gelly Crossing.
John was a coal miner and Isaac a colliery labourer. I have been unable to find an Isaac Napier around that age born in Somerset. It may be that this is actually Isaac Napper, born in Australia, who had come from Canada.

Hello Lee701 and Welcome to Roots chat

thanks for pointing out  the marriage details  I  had shown for Ernest W Napper to Ellen Wright were incorrect.

By another tree out  there in cyber space
Ernest William Napper born 1870 in South Australia married Rowena  Bartlett Garrison Church,Colaba, Bombay, India.  He died in 1950 in Flax Bourton, Somerset

Recently been sent all this Napper info by good old post! am interested because my husband is a "Wright", his late cousin was a Napper desc. We live in Somerset very close to Compton Dundon. I have various inf for example re Jacob Napper 1849, do we agree she went on to remarry David Nicol in 1895? Also was she married to Julius Reigert or David John Sloan in 1876 before her marriage to Jacob?
If the person desc from Isaac Edgar Napper is still following the thread & likes to get in touch I have a couple of small snippets of local info?
Will leave it at this for now but am sure there will be other questions/answers Doidy

Hi, I am the desc of Isaac Edgar Napper and am still searching for any info on the Napper family.
I agree about David Nicol. He was born in Scotland and he married Marie Clara Napper in 1895 registered Jun in Westminster. re the marriage in 1876, that Marie married Julius Riegert 8 Oct 1876 at St Philip, Stepney and I believe her name may have been Ann Marie so not the Marie Clara who married Jacob Napper in 1882.
I am happy to give you any info I have on the Napper family which may assist you and would be very pleased to hear about any new information that you may be able to provide.

Hi Colin.
Good to be in touch. Thanks for helping sort Marie & her possible husband's out. Do you have a death ref for her? We have this death for Marie Nicol Sept.1917 age 56y Uxbridge!!!!!!!? Not verified.
Back to Isaac Edgar Napper your ancestor. I have him married to Jane Prosser but no details for her, or no descs?  I have borrowd my husband's late cousins "Napper" file & am busy putting it all into my family treemaker program. His info is likely to be very reliable. It states Isaac Edgar Napper was k/a "Ike" at school. Also he left Compton Dundon School on 1 12 1880 as his parents left the area. I know it is only a tiny bit of info, but all helps. I have followed all the replies posted to your query, they have helped me considerably with my Napper research. I am unfamiliar with this site, I would love further info re your line & am happy to exchange further Napper info I have. How does one go about making direct contact?

Hi Doidy,
Thanks for the info on Isaac. It all helps and is much appreciated. I didn't know about the nickname but the timing of his leaving that school fits with the family moving to Canada. I have Isaac married to Mary Prosser not Jane. I don't have any details of Marie's death as yet. I have had another look for info on Jacob and believe he may have been married before he married Marie. 29 Nov 1874, Hampstead Middlesex, Jacob Napper, father William Napper shoemaker, married Gwenleon Jones.  I believe she died 1881 Westminster. Reference direct contact - this site has a good system of Personal Message. This facility is available to send/receive messages when you have made at least 3 posts (see the FAQ at the beginning of the Forum). As soon as you make another Post I will send you a Personal Message and we can swap info. Colin
