Do let us know, Jenny, when/if you get an answer!  This is very bad news!  Sad Sad  My local LDS FHC has drastically reduced its hours, and films are no longer available in Australia - for whatever reason, I know not!  It seems that all over the world, the excellent service that we used to get from the LDS is declining!  Sad Cry

How about volunteering to man it yourself ?

I'm sure that I wouldn't want to sit in a stuffy room in this heat for 4 hours a day without getting paid for it.

The Staines LDS stopped non church members manning their library a few years ago, there may be a problem with manning it but I know the person that ran the session all day on the day I visited loved doing it and wanted to continue so that obviously wasn't the issue there.

With regard to your earlier post about closing for the summer, we had the same as Jenny as we were not allowed to order films when we returned after Xmas and were told it would only be closed for a couple of months - it shut at the end of March and there is no sign of it reopening.

I did Nick....along with the other people in the room at the time!
but apparently the LDS want a church member and that is a step too far in my book, the person who I spoke to said there were plenty of other non Mormon volunteers but that wasn't acceptable.
Think there is some local politics going on, I have met the church member who runs it several times ... Lips Sealed

I'm going to send an email to the London branch and see what the official answer is.

Jenny

I'm just wondering what being a church member would entail ?   I'm not particularly religious, so it wouldn't bother me one way or the other about being a member of the church.  As long as they didn't want me to swear an oath or anything like that.  Not that I'm volunteering, mind !  Grin

Yes - I do believe you have to tithe your salary - and probably undergo a ceremony of reception into the church - and be expected to attend church every Sunday.  I don't think there's such a thing as a "nominal" Mormon - sorry, Nick!!!   Roll Eyes

No need to apologise - I'd already made it clear that I had no intention of volunteering - I have a business to run.   I've only used the local LDS facilities once in the last two years, and that was a fruitless exercise.  Some institutions are quite happy to accept volunteers from outside - seems that the LDS are not one of them.  Ahh well  Smiley

There's definitely an impression of a 'new broom' at the LDS in relation to the family history centres. First the large increase in the fees, now what appears to be a clampdown on running them with non LDS volunteers.

Their choice of course, and I suppose their commitment to making the films available to non LDS members of the public could be met by a few large centres like the Hyde Park one.

It is a loss of easily accessible parish records though, to add to those which have been lost through the closure of Family History Online. It's not getting easier to research pre 1837, except in specific areas like the Forest of Dean. Although there are a lot of records online now, what's often missing is a global search of an area.

There are obvious dangers of relying too heavily on the LDS.   Because their resources are so large, a search of their database often reveals several matches to a given search, and the temptation is to assume that the match has to be the best one, when in actual fact they don't have the real match at all.

That's why I consult the films of the actual parish registers rather than relying on the IGI!

Also, the LDS have many more films than have been extracted for the IGI. Worth looking at the library catalogue.

Anne, you have stated the problem in one sentence...
If LDS FH centres shut permanently the films will no longer be available and they are what is so valuable.

My understanding is that the LDS are digitising their films of parish registers, and that these will eventually be available online.  It may take a few years yet, but Charlotte, I don't think they will be lost to us, even if LDS family history centres close/reduce their hours.

MarieC, that's something to dream about... the films online...the raw data

The LDS are very enterprising and keen to have peopleengage in family research- there is a theologically drive behind them making the information available, so it may just be a matter of time until we can access the info online...

I assumed (hoped) that they were intending to use the pilot site for that - similar to Durham BTs that are on there already.

From what I know, I believe you are right, Christine.  It will just take a while to happen (because of the sheer volume of this material!)
