Removal of full marriage index from Ancestry
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 15:47 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Is anybody else having problems matching spouses to incomplete entries on both freebmd and the new "fully" transcribed index?

We all know that it is not unusual to have an uneven number of male/females on the same page of a marriage lookup and the previous availability of the full index helped to resolve it

A similar problem is now being experienced on the allegedly fully transcribed index 1916-2005.

On 3 occasions in the past couple of days I have selected the "Find Spouse" facility and had a "not found" message.  Yes - the surname is known but I want to find his/her christian name

Without the full index - there is no way to double check unless we use the full index at the library - so why am I paying an Ancestry sub for access to the BMD index??

had a couple of those Carol - in both cases, something like a page number slightly differed, so I guess it threw the search.

worth reversing the search and try the spouse surname manually, then filter down to year, District etc ...

the full index is still effectively there isnt it - list of years to click on - just below the search boxes ..

From my experience, in these cases, the surname has been wrongly transcribed, I have had a number of these.

No - it isn't and the reverse search does not work in most cases.  This is what Ancestry presents

Marriages

Marriages 1837 – 1915 (transcribed by FreeBMD)

Marriages 1916 - 2005 (transcribed)

Marriages are fully searchable by name and you will find individual matches in these collections.

They used to include "search the full index 1837-2005"

I am referring to the full GRO index where you were able to download the image and search the page - this is just an example below - not a real entry

Marriage for Mary Smith Sept qtr 1916 - spouse surname Brown

Select "find spouse" and get no trace so christian names of Mr Brown are unknown

Previously - with the full index available I would have been able to download and search all Brown entries for the same qtr until I found one with the same Volume and Page number

Same with freebmd and missing spouse.  Here is an actual example

Marriages September qtr 1856  - all Clerkenwell 1B 706

Julia Barber
Mary Ann Campion Brewer
Henry Charles Carr
John Keates
Maria Probert

3 women and only 2 men.  I am trying to match Julia Barber to a Charles William Doherty and without the full index - I can't

Hi

I've had the same - click on "find spouse" and it comes up not found. This has happened several times. I'm sure that didn't used to be there, didn't it just ask if you wanted to see others on the page?

Hi

It is there but not in the obvious place.  Anybody having problems may want to add this link to their "Quick Links"

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8965&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0

If you select "Birth, Marriage and Death" Indexes from the Home Page- you are not given the choice of searching the full index

Quote
Record Collections
UK Census Records
1901 1891 1881 1871 1861 1851 1841 more...

More Collections
Birth, Marriage & Death Indexes
Military Records
Immigration & Emigration Records
Ancestry Card Catalogue

However - if you select "SEARCH" from the top of the Home Page

THEN - BMD index from the drop down menu

THEN - scroll down to "Search Individual Titles in this Category"

You will eventually find the full GRO index for Marriages 1837-1983

Only Ancestry could choose such a convoluted way of finding it - why on earth isn't it on the normal BMD page as it was previously?Huh

did you see my earlier post - its been lumped under 'FreeBMD marriages' search - I guess a better fit than under 1916 onward. But yes, more obvious location would have helped.

In fact they've done exactly the same with BIRTH Indexes.

see you've logged out - a demain   Wink
