In my general searches for ellusive ancestors I came across two male Williamsons on Family Search. David Williamson born 1843 was living in Indiana (Brandywine) on the USA 1881 census, John Williamson born 1847 was living in Jefferson Jay, also Indiana. They were both born Ireland and were farmers.
Firstly, how do I find out when and how they travelled to the USA and then whether they were brothers? The two males of these names and ages whom I am searching for "disappeared" after the 1851 census. The two Williamsons on the USA census were both down as being born in Ireland although mine were definitely born in Scotland, see 1851 census. I just thought, as a long shot, they might not have known they were born in Scotland.
These things I have to prove one way or another.
Can anyone please advise me where to go from here please?

In the 1900 Census, there is David R. Williamson in Richland, Jay Co., Indiana. It says he was born Nov. 1844 in Ireland. His father was born Scotland, and mother born Ireland. It says he immigrated in 1845 and had been married to wife Minerva for 28 years.
In the 1910 Census, David & Minerva are still in Richland. It says David was born in Ireland, as were his parents. Under year of immigration, it says "67" and that he was naturalized. It says he & Minerva had been married for 37 years. They were living with son Austin, who was age 35, single, born in Missouri, and an attorney.
The 1870 Census has a John Williamson in Brandywine, Hancock Co., who was age 23 & born in Ireland. He was living with Martha Williamson, age 60; James, age 28; Andrew, age 26; and Robert, age 20, all born in Ireland. In the 1860 Census, the same family seems to be living in Brandywine, except there is Hugh Williamson, age 60 & born in Ireland with them.

Thank you for taking the trouble to search for these ancestors of mine.
It would appear from what you are telling me that John Williamsons parents were Martha and Hugh so, therefore, not my ancestor.
My David's parents were both born Ireland and he was born 1843. The plot thickens! I like the sound of "Brandywine".
This query came about because I have just been reading two books about the Irish Potato Famine and the emigration to both Canada and Boston. What a terrible disaster that was! I could well imagine that, if my Williamsons did make the journey, then there was a good chance they perished from typhoid, chlorera or just malnutrition.
I will keep searching nevertheless.
