Extraction error.
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 17:46 UTC (UK) »

Chatters,

I have evidence to show my 5Xgr grandmother was Betty YOUNG who was christened on 26th May 1718 In Horsley.

I first found Betty's christening as an extracted entry in the IGI which gives her parents as John and Hester, but as I never accept extracted entries as being the gospel truth, I hired and searched the appropriate LDS film.  This I did a few months ago.

However, in the 1718/19 Horsley  BT's is clearly shown the christening, "Betty ye Daughter of John and Elizabeth  Young May ??"  I could not make out the actual date but the previous entry for a William Ashman? was in Apriil and the next entry is for Ann Osborn? on June 6th?  So the LDS extraction is incorrect.  I leave you to check for William A and Ann O.

Fair enough, the HW site gives other christenings of children of Hester and John Young but there's none for Elizabeth and John.

O.K.  O.K.  So Elizabeth might have died and John married a Hester or they might have moved away from Horsley, but why does the 1718 extraction show Hester?  Seems a possibility that the LDS extractor changed it when a few other John/Hester christenings were found.

I have searched the BT's again and cannot find Elizabeth's burial.

So, if extracted IGI entries lead you to a swamp rather than a brick wall, consider searching an LDS film Cheesy

Regards

Chas

P.S. Added

I checked the John /Hester children's christenings, no errors.

C

It may not be an extraction error, though of course it could easily be..

The Source Call Number 0091528 &  0091529 contain records from various sources i.e. -

Births, 1749-1806  Baptist Church (Horsley, Gloucestershire)
Bishop's transcripts for Horsley, 1580-1812  Church of England. Parish Church of Horsley (Gloucestershire)
Marriages at Horsley, 1591-1812  Church of England. Parish Church of Horsley (Gloucestershire)
Parish registers for Horsley, 1587-1881  Church of England. Parish Church of Horsley (Gloucestershire)

It is therefore possible that there is a variation between the Parish Registers and the Bishop’s Transcripts.

You have checked the BTs have you also checked the Parish Registers?
Cheers

Guy,

Whenever I intend to hire an LDS film for PR's or BT's I obtain their numbers from the LDS library catalogue then usually print the film notes to take to the LDS FHC.

I dug out all my pinkies (LDS receipts for film hires) and found I have hired and searched films number 595449 (PR's q.v.) which includes christenings 1587 - 1837:  425442 (BT's) 1580 - 1812 and 091528 (PR's) 1587 - 1881.   I've also searched 091529 but that's for marriages only.   It seems that film 595449 has been "split" into films 091528 and 29 doesn't it?

Checking the pinkies I found that when I searched the film of PR's I had not found my connection to Youngs so perhaps the BT's from which I found Betty's christening may contain a transcription error.  That needs to be checked out.

Thanks for your reply, it's always helps to make one think laterally.

Regards
