Shands???
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 19:50 BST (UK) » |

Hi, I am doing a family tree of my family+relatives. I gone back as far as 1700? with the shands in Beath?, Fife, with an Andrew Shand and so have most people who are also doing family trees. One person says, Andrew shand had brother, called Thomas shand, born about 1736???
The only Thomas shands I come across are from the ABERDEEN area from about 1736. Anyone have any idea's? Also does anyone know when/what year the shands came to Fife?
yours, Jonathan Shand.

Beath is a small parish in the district of Dunfermline, Fife, within it are the villages of Cowdenbeath,(not to be confused with the town near Glasgow), Kelty & Oakfield. Also found in older documents spelt 'Baith'.
You mean you've never heard of Sir Jimmy Shand ? Famous musician b East Weymss Fife 1908 died 23 Dec 2000. Lived in Auchtermuchty Fife.
This from Trades and Crafts Minute Book Burntisland 1685-1835:

Then why did you query Beath? as if you didn't understand where it was?
As to whether there are connections between Shands in Fife and Aberdeenshire - it's entirely possible, I know of two Fife families who had 17thC connections with Aberdeenshire (Christie & Leslie).
As to trying to find Thomas Shand- do you know his occupation? Has the person who said Andrew had a brother been able to say where they found that information?
