Death Look up please Bow(e)ring
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 12:50 UTC (UK) »

In recent research I discovered that my 3x Great Grandparents James Bow(e)ring and Anne Jane Shorto had two daughters called Jane.
Up until a few days ago I thought they had only one, and that she was called Jane Shorto Bow(e)ring.   According to Family search IGI she was christened on 12th Sep 1819 in Sydling St Mary's.

Ref# 184646

Whilst searching for loose ends I came across another entry this time for Jane Bowering daugher of James and Anne.  This Jane was christened on 21 August 1825 again at Sydling St Mary's.

RFef: Film#452886

Ref# 184647.

It also seems that maybe she was one of a twin as her sister Charlotte was christened on the same day as she was.

Now this is where the confusing part comes in.  I have a copy of a page from the parish records that has Jane Bowring's burial listed on it. The date is 1826 and  I think Jan 1st.  She was listed as an infant.
I realise that quite often they gave their children the named of a deceased child, does that mean that the Jane born in 1819 was also deceased as I can find no record of her death at all.

:-\Or is this the death of the first Jane who would of been around 6 years old.  Did they class that age also as an infant.

I would appreciate any help at all with this problem.
Thank you
Chris

Hello, Chris,

I have looked at the IGI entries for the bapts of Jane Bowering 12t Sept. 1819, also those of Jane & Charlotte Bowering, same date 21st Aug.1825.  If you look at the bottomof these entries you will see that these have been submitted by a member of the LSD church, meaning that they have not been transcibed from the original church record, therefore errors do occur & these have to be viewed wth a certan amounty leniency.

Because Jane & Charlotte were baptised on the same day, it does not follow that they were twins.  They could have been born some years apart but not baptised until the same day.  Sometimes you wil find as many as 8 or more children of onen family all bapt the same day altho' born over quite a few years,    We jokingly say perhaps parents thought they would get a quantity discount or it was cheaper by the dozen.

Have you checked the 1841 census for this family ?   If not, here it is.

1841 census
HO107/286/ book 8  folio 7  page 8
St Martin Winterbourne  Dorset

James Bowering  age 40  Ag Lab  born in county Yes
Ann age 45   b   ditto
Louisa  age 20   b   ditto
John age 20  b   ditto
Charles  age 15   b   ditto
Charlotte  age 15   b   ditto
Rebecca  age 10   b   ditto

The Vital Records Index shows this family

All  children of James & Ann Bowering

Louisa bapt 31 st Jan 1817  Sydling St Mary
Jane Shorto  bapt 12 Sept.  1819  b  ditto
Charles  bapt 19th June 1823  b  ditto
Charlotte  bapt  21st Aug 1825  Winterbourne St Martin
Jane  bapt 21st Aug, 1825   b  ditto
Rebecca   bapt  7th Dec  1828  b   ditto
Samuel   bapt   7th Dec  1828  b   ditto

So it looks as tho' your two Janes were baptised at diferenct churches.

Also, it is a pity that neither Jane is shown in the 1841 census, so it is still not certain which Jane died.  However there is this entry.

1841 census
HO107/972  book 5  folio 19  page 20

High St Taunton

Jane Bowering  age 20  F S  not born in county.

Thro'out the name is shown as either Bowring or Bowering.

I have just checked the National Burial Index, this shows,

Jane Shorto Bowering
buried 27th Aug  1820  Syding St Nicholas.

This may be the answer to your problem, it could be that both Janes died, the second one would be classed as an infant if born 1825, died 1826

Hi Meliora
many many thanks for that information, it is really appreciated.  I am fairly new to all this research, and I was given a lot of information from someone else in the family who was doing all this research and of course I thought that everything he gave me was correct...HOW WRONG COULD I BE.

I now find myself going over everything and having to almost restart, but it is a good exercise.
the research I received has Jane Shorto Bowering married with children..oh dear.

I do have one more question if you dont mind.
the page that I have from the parish register does not give a name of a parent, just Janes and the date of burial.  I think now that it may not be the second Jane, as I have been looking and searching and there are quite a few Jane Bowrings all born around that time.  some of them belonging to my relatives and others I am not sure about.  How do I go about finding who the parents were for this infant Jane...do you have any idea.

Once again many thanks..
Cheers

The only thing I can suggest for looking for the parent's of the Jane whose burial record you have, is to kook at the bapt records for the same church, I take it that the church name is mentioned in the burial PR.   Look for any Jane Bowering bapt reasonably near the date of the burial as she is stated to be "infant".

Good Luck,

Hi Christ,

Have you tried a general search on the OPC Dorset site?
